facebook.comADDRESSES AT THE PARLIAMENT OF RELIGIONS RESPONSE TO WELCOME At the World's Parliament of Religions, Chicago 11th September, 1893 Sisters and Brothers of America, It fills my heart with joy unspeakable to rise in response to the warm and cordial welcome which you have given us. I thank you in the name of the most ancient order of monks in the world; I thank you in the name of the mother of religions; and I thank you in the name of millions and millions of Hindu people of all classes and sects. My thanks, also, to some of the speakers on this platform who, referring to the delegates from the Orient, have told you that these men from far-off nations may well claim the honour of bearing to different lands the idea of toleration. I am proud to belong to a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true. I am proud to belong to a nation which has sheltered the persecuted and the refugees of all religions and all nations of the earth. I am proud to tell you that we have gathered in our bosom the purest remnant of the Israelites, who came to Southern India and took refuge with us in the very year in which their holy temple was shattered to pieces by Roman tyranny. I am proud to belong to the religion which has sheltered and is still fostering the remnant of the grand Zoroastrian # nation. I will quote to you, brethren, a few lines from a hymn which I remember to have repeated from my earliest boyhood, which is every day repeated by millions of human beings: "As the different streams having their sources in different places all mingle their water in the sea, so, O Lord, the different paths which men take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to Thee." The present convention, which is one of the most august assemblies ever held, is in itself a vindication, a declaration to the world of the wonderful doctrine preached in the Gita: "Whosoever comes to Me, through whatsoever form, I reach him; all men are struggling through paths which in the end lead to me." Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism, have long possessed this beautiful earth. They have filled the earth with violence, drenched it often and often with human blood, destroyed civilisation and sent whole nations to despair. Had it not been for these horrible demons, human society would be far more advanced than it is now. But their time is come; and I fervently hope that the bell that tolled this morning in honour of this convention may be the death-knell of all fanaticism, of all persecutions with the sword or with the pen, and of all uncharitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal.

I tell you one thing my child — if you want peace, do not find fault with others. Rather, see your own faults. Learn to make the world your own. No one is a stranger, my child; the whole world is your own. From Sri Sarada Devi’s last words, spoken before passing away on July 20, 1920.

EACH SOUL IS POTENTIALLY DIVINE. THE GOAL IS TO MANIFEST THIS DIVINE WITHIN, BY CONTROLLING NATURE, EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL. DO THIS EITHER BY WORK, OR WORSHIP, OR PSYCHIC CONTROL, OR PHILOSOPHY, BY ONE, OR MORE, OR ALL OF THESE—AND BE FREE. THIS IS THE WHOLE OF RELIGION. DOCTRINES, OR DOGMAS, OR RITUALS, OR BOOKS, OR TEMPLES, OR FORMS, ARE BUT SECONDARY DETAILS.

Retreat in May (13 - 15) 2016 in Bindweide with Swami Sunirmalananda of Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre, Holland. Topic: Converting Everyday Problems into Spiritual Gain (As usual, the discourses will be translated sentence-for-sentence into German. Kindly enrol yourself well in advance so as to help us arrange for your accommodation in or near the Ashrama.) Many things in life are not under our personal control. So many things are working inside us and there are so many circumstances outside – our environment, our relationships with other people which we cannot violate or change merely at will – that it is difficult to just break all these bonds and bring about a revolutionary change within ourselves. Nor is it expected of us, especially in the beginning stages, since that would often be positively harmful! If we bring about quick changes within ourselves, we are not able to make the necessary adjustment, and because of this lack of adjustment, we find we have lost control over our own being, over our own mental states, and over our relationships with others. All in all, it is not a very happy situation. That is why spiritual life has to be so lived, spiritual practice has to be so designed, that this very necessary change within oneself is brought about in slow and gradual measure, particularly in the early stages. A certain change has to be brought about also in the quality of the relationships we have with other people and in our relationship with the world. We will have to read more and more meaning – spiritual meaning – into those things which ordinarily appear to be rather worldly, and opposed to spirituality. The difficulty lies in the fact that spiritual interests and worldly interests are mutually opposed; they cannot be brought together by any effort. Can this conflict be resolved? Swami Sunirmalananda, head of Ramakrishna Vedanta Society of Netherlands, Amstelveen, will conduct a three-day interactive retreat on the above subject.

Open your grief-stricken heart to the Lord. Weep and sincerely pray, 'O Lord, draw me towards You; give me peace of mind.' By doing so constantly you, will gradually attain peace of mind. ----- Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi
