The International Genetically Engineered Maschine (iGEM) competition is a worldwide interdisciplinary contest in Synthetic Biology originally aimed at undergraduate students, but has expanded to include High School and Professional Lab teams. iGEM started in January of 2003 with a month-long course at MIT and grew to a summer competition with 5 teams in 2004.
Since 2005 iGEM is international and finally grew to a number of 216 teams in 2013. Each team gets a kit of biological standard parts from the Registry of Standard Biological Parts. Standard parts possess specific pre- and suffixes by which they can be arranged in any order. These parts and new self-designed parts as well are used to set biological systems and operate them in living cells.
