MONOM
Berlin’s center for spatial sound.

Home to the world's most advanced spatial sound system, built by 4DSOUND. With the opening of MONOM at the historic Funkhaus Berlin, Berlin gains an experimental performance venue and state of the art spatial sound studio.

At the heart of MONOM is the 4DSOUND system, brought to life by a collective of engineers and over 100 artists during a decade long period of research, experimentation and public performances. This one of a kind instrument immerses up to 400 people inside 48 omnidirectional speakers suspended throughout the venue, extending to 9 powerful subs submerged beneath an acoustically transparent floor.

MONOM commissions artist residencies and public performances that will explore the possibilities of spatial sound as an expressive medium.

Beyond unprecedented realtime control over sounds parameters, 4DSOUND pioneers the harmonious integration with any and all interfaces – movement, light, virtual augmented reality, bio-feedback, metric or brainwave - providing an opportunity for artists to collaborate and combine sensory dimensions - in effect to compose, and perform a live ecosystem.

MONOM will use this powerful integration as a summons to bring together not only sonic artists and musicians across genre and styles but also artists and technologists across disciplines –- making MONOM also one of the world's premier immersive experience laboratories.

Each artist will take part in a residency working in-depth with the 4DSOUND spatial instrument to compose a 3D composition especially for the night. What will unfold is unknown - but when working with a fully omnidirectional sound environment where sound can be experienced in an unlimited spatial continuum - anything is possible.

Call for participants!! Rona Geffen and the Spatial Sound Institute seek participants for an experiment on physiological reception and mental experience of sound. The experiment will take place from March 24 - 28th at MONOM in 4DSOUND - an advanced immersive sound system where the listener is experiencing sound in multiple dimensions. The study will involve psychological questionnaires and monitoring participants’ vital signs and brain activity using EEG (an unobtrusive brainwave measure). For those who experienced Russian sound artist and researcher IOANN perform as part of the CTM Festival programme Transcend the Turmoil, and even for those who weren't able to attend, this article by artist Ivan Sapozhkov and curator Paul Oomen is a fascinating exploration into the formal ideas behind the work. Since November 2016, Russian sound artist and researcher IOANN has been artist-in-residence at the Spatial Sound Institute in Budapest. "Imagining the Hyperspace" consists of nine projections of particular geometric structures in sound - from the most elementary concepts of geometry such as a point, line and triangle, to highly complex ones such as the tesseract and 24-cell octaplex. This article was originally published accompanying the live presentations by the artist of ‘Imagining the Hyperspace’ from Tuesday 30th January - Friday 2nd February 2018 as part of the programme Transcend the Turmoil, a joint production by CTM Festival, MONOM and the Spatial Sound Institute. "We’re ushered into the sleeping room at about 11.45pm, and at first sight, all my worries subside. The huge industrial room is shrouded in a purple haze with 70 mattresses elevated on a platform, along with a fresh pillows and neatly folded blankets. As I lie on my bed for the night and stare up towards the ceiling, I’m reminded of Anthony McCall’s description of haze as “ambient sea-mist” and I’m soothed by the enveloping violet cloud that means I can’t really see or be seen" — sleek magazine

"The absence of visible focus points was unsettling, betraying the collective habit of facing towards the performer. In the end, it was 4DSOUND itself that generated and contained the artwork, cultivating a different listening experience and allowing visitors to wonder about all of the various fictional universes that could be created at MONOM" — Berlin Art Link
