Thanks to sponsorship by event waterproof fabrics and some intense sewing commitment by guides who would rather have been outdoors actually working with dogs, not only have all of our previous dog blankets (nicely chewed up by the dogs during the last winter) been repaired, but we have also started to work on a new 'Hetta Huskies' line of blankets - as modelled here by Buddha, a Lance Mackey dog - targeted specifically at the body types of the majority of our dogs. We think that they look and feel so nice that we are now scared to give them to the dogs to destroy!.

Some people think that the commercial sleddog companies don't care for their dogs. I would very much like to argue that that is just not true. Over a thousand euros in just the last vet bill to come in! On a positive note, when working closely with the local vets, we learn some pretty useful skills ourselves. (This was taken at the end of a castration of a dog (Kiri) that was susceptible to frostbite on his testicles - possibly because of an underlying condition (hypothyroidism)).

1 Day Santa TripEnchanting Lapland - Santa Holidays

-32C in the Arctic today. Yesterday it was -8C. You never know what the weather will be like in the arctic! Today 400 people have again popped into our village for a day from the UK to see Santa (and our dogs) with Canterbury Travel (the best Santa-Tour operator we have seen on the market). It is a tad chilly but hopefully they will still have a great day.

Our new (tiny) location in Ylläs...built from knowledge honed from years of hard-earned experience. Everything smells so nice and fresh there...time to think about rebuilding some of our oldest cages again on the homestead next summer
