Mental Health and Well-being services

It's an incredibly stressful time for students so we asked Abi, one of our psychological practitioners, to talk through some of the services available to give support through these challenging times. Here are some links to the services mentioned in the video: ➡️The University's well-being pages: https://intranet.birmingham.ac.uk/student/your-wellbeing/index.aspx ➡️How to register with a doctor: https://intranet.birmingham.ac.uk/student/taking-care-of-yourself/registering-with-a-doctor.aspx ➡️The Nightline service: https://www.guildofstudents.com/support/livinginbirmingham/saftey/nightline/

What is the Rule of 6 and what does it mean to Birmingham students? 👇 ➡️ It is against the law to socialise in a group of more than 6 people, indoors or outside, anywhere in England. That means no parties or social gatherings of more than 6 people in any setting (unless you live together in the same flat or house or are in the same support bubble). ➡️ In Birmingham household to household socialising is not permitted. That means you cannot visit other flats or houses - only the people you live with can be in your flat or house. ➡️ Universities are exempt from the Rule of 6 but ONLY for educational activities, not social events. That means teaching will be in groups of greater than 6, with additional safety measures in place. On campus socialising will be restricted to socially-distanced groups of 6. We need to all work together to keep Covid safe - both on campus and within the local community: https://intranet.birmingham.ac.uk/student/2020/keeping-covid-safe.aspx

There are Five Ways to stop the spread of Covid (hands up who sees the cheeky reference to a well-known Birmingham landmark in the title!) 1. Cover up: wear a face covering inside wherever a 2 metre distance isn’t possible 😷 2. Keep your distance and use the one-way systems on campus ⛔️ 3. Wash up: wash your hands and sanitise them regularly 🤲 4. Self-isolate and test: if you get symptoms, however mild, get tested straight away and follow self-isolation advice 🤒 5. Socialise sensibly: follow local guidance on who you can socialise with and where ⚠️ As the academic year begins we ask all students to do their part in helping to keep our campus and our local community safe. https://intranet.birmingham.ac.uk/student/2020/keeping-covid-safe.aspx

The University of Birmingham and the Commonwealth Games

Take a look behind the scenes of the launch of our partnership with Birmingham 2022 on campus earlier this week! Some of our sport scholars shared what the Games mean to them, and we join them in saying we can’t wait for 2022! It’s great to see the positive reactions from across our community to the news of the partnership and we look forward to sharing more with you throughout our journey to 2022 🙌

It's been a really tough start to the academic year for students - especially new starters who aren't able to enjoy the usual Welcome Week activities. So this year we opened Lakeside in the grounds of our gorgeous Vale Village - an outdoor venue for all our students. It's a Covid-safe way to enjoy the cinema, have a drink, some street food, live music and enjoy a touch of carnival-style fun! 🍿🥤🍔 We recognise that students are restricted in the activities they can do this year so it's a great way of connecting with flatmates, staying safe and still being able to have fun 😊 https://www.guildofstudents.com/lakeside/

Operation Moonshot proposals are scientifically unsound, experts argue

The government's Operation Moonshot could do more harm than good, a group of UK experts have argued in a new article published by the British Medical Journal BMJ The experts argue that identifying the truly infectious and therefore those who must isolate, is not straightforward. “Even with a specificity of 99%, government proposals to do ten million tests a day, will generate tens of thousands of false positive results, causing unnecessary but legally enforced isolation of both cases and contacts with potentially damaging consequences for the UK economy and for civil liberties.” says lead author Prof Jon Deeks.
