Artist of the Week Barbara Kelnhofer Staufen im Breisgau, Germany Immediately after graduating from secondary school/ high school I moved to London where I worked with ‘Foyles Bookshop’ for one year. It is here where I discovered my love for books. Back in Germany I first worked at Herder, Freiburg and then did my 2 year apprenticeship as bookseller at Walthari university bookshop, Freiburg. My next “station” was Freiburg University, studying European Ethnology and Social Anthropolgy. During my University time I spent a year studying at the Eidgenössische Hochschule (ETH), Zurich and did an internship at the Town Museum of Schramberg, in the Black Forest. During all these years I attended evening courses in bookbinding at open university in the bookbinding workshop of Mr Troendle, master bookbinder at Freiburg City Public Library, right across from Freiburg Cathedral. Mr Troedle’s workshop became a kind of refuge for me and I acquired many different techniques of bookbinding and discovered marbled or domino paper making and other decorated papers for myself. An intensive process of studying the various techniques, the colours and the history of decorated papers, especially paper marbling began. Paper as a medium of artistic expression has stayed with me ever since. From the beginning oil colours were my favourite mode of expression and this is how I discovered oleaugraphy, which has become my passion. Three wonderful and miraculous years I lived, travelled and worked in Zimbabwe and southern Africa, collecting ideas, sources and materials for my master thesis in social anthropology. I became enthralled with the many decorative crafts and the craftsmanship of the people there, and I collected patterns and colours. Some years later I was able to combine all my different experiences in the field of museum educational service and in the creation of teaching aids and materials for global learning at primary school level. After twenty years of boarding school life at Schule Birklehof near Hinterzarten, Black Forest, tides of change have washed me ashore in the small town of Staufen. Here a period of even more intensive work with and love for Oleaugraphy began and I am busy experimenting with and discovering new avenues, developing my knowledge and my skills in this particular art form. Possibilities seem endless. Currently I am researching on the connection between Sufism, trance and Ebru Art and want to explore the possibilities of the art of oleaugraphy in this direction from the point of view of the ethnologist to gain new insights into a world apart. One never knows where such studies will take you. First journeys to visit Ebru Artists are planned. I am curious myself, where my art will take me next. I love to exchange ideas with marblers and ebru-artists from all around the globe and that it is important for me, to share my work and communicate with marblers on Facebook, and to see their work too and to be part of their experiences and developments in the art. It is a 'give and take' and bears the chance of building up a supportive network. 5th of June 2016 starting at 1 pm we will try to get a record in Dobrovice, Czech Republic at Dobrovická muzea. We would like to invite everyone to this event. Since last October Šárka Duran and Xenia Sulimenko started non-profitable project in Ebru Patchwork, which will combine works of many great artists who fall in love with Ebru. Ebru is very unique and ancient art of painting on surface of the water. Many phycologist using it as art therapy to heal souls and make life more colorful. Since 2014 Ebru is on UNESCO heritage list thanks to great person and artist Atilla Can, who will join us on 5th of June in Dobrovice. This project was created with a thought to spread knowledge about this beautiful and magic art and will combine works of 191 artists from 37 countries around the world. We are still waiting for 51 more artists to submit their masterpieces. The final masterpiece which will be big quilt of friendship will be presented in September during World Ebru Day. Artist of the week Vesile Yılmaz Perth, Australia Vesile originally a Montessori Trained Early Childhood Teacher has been doing Turkish style of water marbling, Ebru, for 12 years now. She is mostly self-taught like many other Ebru artists. She uses all original and traditional materials such as horse-hair, rose branch brushes and natural mineral pigment paints. She gives courses and workshops on paper marbling and silk marbling. She does live Ebru demonstrations and projection shows on at festivals and art shows. Art therapy Make a digital collage. Short on art supplies, or simply more of a computer person? Fire up your laptop, and download one of many free collage programs. You can create a collage from your own photographs and memories, or conduct an online search to find images that resonate with you. Programs such as Photoshop will provide the most options, but more rudimentary programs such as Photoshop Elements, PowerPoint or some Adobe platforms offer enough for a first effort. Create an affirmation you can carry with you. Gain a more frequent boost from your art therapy efforts by creating a product that you can literally carry with you. Whether it’s a piece of jewelry, an article of clothing, or a key chain, choose images, words, and colors that remind you of how and what you want to feel. Not sure how to begin?
