Become Ani/omalous
Description
Become Ani/omalous is an interdisciplinary project which includes theoretical, literary and art presentations with the theme of cultural anomaly.
The project will take place on 14, 15, and 16 of March, 2014 in Multimedia Center, a part of Student Center in Zagreb, in cooperation with the Culture of Change. This year’s participants are: Monika Bregović (theory presentation), Matija Čop (exhibition), Irena Čurik (theory presentation), Stefanie Heine (theory presentation), Nino Kovačić (theory presentation), Tonka Maleković (video), Suzana Marjanić (theory presentation), Petar Matović (poetry reading), Ivana Rogar (fiction reading).
The project’s starting point is the theory of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari who say that Western metaphysical binary oppositions are hierarchical, and therefore can be potentially considered symbolic, as well as literal violence. Only some of these oppositions are: rational-irrational, human-animal, culture-nature. Although exclusion of an inferior “other” grounds the constitution of a system, its existence is also a necessary precondition – “other” is part of the dominant regime and participates in its reproduction. A change of the existing territory comes from the margin, from “other” but tends to get institutionalized as soon as it is noticed. ANOMALY is in this sense rather impossible to sustain. However, according to Deleuze & Guattari, body is constantly being exposed to affects which deterritorialize perception, destroy the established territories and open the body to a precarious mode of BECOMING. D&G see a potential in “art” as one of the possible openings towards “becoming” between binary oppositions, a gap in which the existing politics between bodies is being questioned and opened to possible futures, while separated from the institutionalized and sedimented orders. What is considered human subject is overwhelmed by non-human forces which through becoming deterritorialize them from all fixed identities constructed on hierarchical dichotomies.
