It all started in 1802, when a man named George Hall moved his family to the New South Wales Colony. By 1825 he had established two cattle stations with plans to expand further. The biggest issue was getting the cattle to Sydney, as thousands of cows would have to be moved for thousands of kilometers along unfenced trade routes that went through rough wilderness and mountainous terrain. The breed is the result of an experiment that was started in 1955, when Karel Hartl decided to cross a German Shepherd Dog with a Carpathian Wolf. At first he was simply considering the idea as a scientific experiment, but a couple years later it was decided to create a new breed of dog. The first generation of these hybrid wolfdogs was born in 1958, to a female wolf named Brita and a male German Shepherd named Cezar. The first generation of these hybrids were still quite wolf-like in both appearance and temperament. Classifications FCI: Group 2, Section 2 Molossoid breeds #340 AKC: N/A UKC: N/A CKC: N/A KC (UK): N/A History More traditionally known as the Cão Fila de São Miguel, the São Miguel Cattle Dog is a large molosser-type dog that was used mostly for driving cattle. The breed originated on São Miguel Island, for which it is named, which was settled by the Portuguese. The island had no mammals on it so plenty of cattle were brought there. The cattle were raised free, and eventually they started to grow wild. Therefore the need for a cattle dog was great. It is said that dogs were brought from a neighbouring island that was also well-known for cattle, and that these dogs played a large role in the development of the São Miguel Cattle Dog. They ended up being great cattle dogs as well as guard dogs. To learn more, follow the link: http://www.barkingbad.ca/2016/07/12/breed-of-the-week-071216/

UKC: Guardian Dog group CKC: Not Recognized History The Presa Canario is a large and relatively rare type of Mastiff the originated on Spain’s Canary Islands. When the Spanish conquered the islands, there was already a sizable population of large molosser-type dogs living alongside the native population. In the early 18th century, many English colonists were coming to the islands and many of them brought dogs with them. The dogs brought from England were eventually cross bred with the native dogs. The exact ancestry wasn’t recorded but it is likely that various Mastiffs, Bulldogs and possibly even Terriers were bred in.
