Orin McIntosh May 23, 1929 – April 11, 2018 Orin was born in Melville, Saskatchewan on May 29, 1929, to Rosalie and John McIntosh where his Dad worked for the railroad. The McIntosh family later moved to Watrous where Orin graduated high school in 1948. Orin remembers working on the Hospital in Watrous. Isn’t it interesting that so much later in life Orin would reproduce so many fascinating scale models of building from the Watrous area. Following High School, Orin enrolled in the C.R.E.I. (Capital Radio Engineering Institute), a correspondence school in the U.S. He worked at CKCK radio in Regina as summer relief, then spent the next 5 years at CFQC Radio in Saskatoon. It was there that he met the love of his life, Arline Schmitt. They were married June 29th, 1953 and shortly after Orin started employment with the CBC at Carman, Manitoba for CBW as a Group 3 Transmitter technician. It was in Carman that Orin and Arline welcomed a daughter Dianne and a son Dan. In 1958 they returned to Watrous and Orin worked at CBK. In Watrous, their family grew with the additions of Brenda and Brian. Orin was self-taught in engineering. As a teen Orin built his own radios and while in Air Cadets constructed a home-built version of a “Link Trainer” which was a flight simulator that pilots could use to train before climbing into an actual aircraft. Orin also hand-crafted a beautiful mahogany boat that was the envy of all. As an enthusiastic hobbyist, Orin built several scale model replicas of steam locomotives, radio controlled planes, a paddle-wheel riverboat and a snow plane. Taking an early retirement from the CBC, when the Watrous transmitter site became fully automated, Orin was then able to spend much more time at his life long hobby. Most recently it has been building scale model replicas of buildings in the Watrous area which hold historical significance. These include the CNR Station and Water Tower, Grain Elevator, CBK Transmitter building and Tuning House, All Saint’s Anglican Church with its historical stained glass window, and most recently Danceland and The Chalet Pool at Manitou Beach. He tried to use original blue prints for his models, but when this was not possible he made his own blue prints by taking digital photos and measurements of the buildings. Orin’s models were proudly featured in a 2017 episode of CBC televisions “Still Standing” filmed at Manitou Beach. https://www.facebook.com/stillstandingtv/videos/662221647311835/?hc_ref=ARShWWIHzUey_3Ty95BzGoRLZ9ap6MBPXEvYSQCI0ZJOpPpI-tTabNh1S20HCM0LegI Orin was instrumental fostering the concept of the Watrous Manitou Beach Heritage Centre and his models will be a focal point for visitors to see and reflect on the history of this area. http://watrousheritage.ca/OrinMcIntosh.php Orin was predeceased by his parents and Son-in-law Don Wilson. Orin is survived by his wife Arline, daughter Dianne (Wilson), Granddaughter Karen (Jeff) Siegfried and Great Grandson Jacob. Grandsons Dale and Brent Wilson, Son Dan (Carol) and Grandsons Brady and Reid. Daughter Brenda and Granddaughter Janelle (Andrew) Booth and Great-grandchildren Logan and Hayden. Son Brian (Cathy) and Grandsons Ryan and Josh and finally, at home, alone, Pete the cat. Orin passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at the Watrous District Health Complex. A Private Family Service will be held at Fotheringham’s Funeral Chapel, Watrous, SK on Monday, April 16, 2018. Alice Louise Smith, was born on April 8, 1921 in Viscount, Saskatchewan. Her parents were Henry and Mary Anne Smith, who came from Prince Edward Island to homestead in Saskatchewan. She attended school in Viscount, and lived on the farm with her family until her marriage to Joe Townley-McKay on April 8, 1940. Every child, grandchild and great grandchild has something that grandma had knit for them - an afghan, toque, mitts, socks, or stuffed animal. She also enjoyed playing cards, especially cribbage. She worked for a number of years at Manitou Lodge. Mom was a caregiver, always looking out for her family and friends with phone calls or visits, and always had a bright smile for everyone. The Incredible story of Dr. Ben Kessler This is the story of Dr. Benjamin Gerald Kessler, lovingly known as Ben by his wife Linda (Klesse), dad to his daughters Andrea and Paula (Kane Trevarthen), papa by his grandchildren Ireland and Kingston, and Dr. Ben by the community that lovingly surrounds him. Dr. Ben was an amazing man that is loved, is missed, and will always be cherished. Dr. Ben was renown for the value he put on working hard, his determination of getting the toughest job done, and how he persevered in the most difficult situations. His strong work ethic served him well while studying Veterinarian Medicine at University in Guelph Ontario, graduating in 1965. As it was his nature, he made many great friends during this time and was happy to attend his graduating class 50-year reunion in 2015. You might think that Dr. Ben was a serious man, as he has been described above. However, he was always making us laugh. Sometime intentionally but often unintentionally as this is simply who he was. His friends will tell you of the pranks he pulled and the good times they had. Dr. Ben married Linda in 1966 and in only a few months, they headed to Watrous. It is here where he would create his own Veterinarian practice. He loved his work and it brought him a lot of joy and satisfaction. However, the relationships he developed were the true drive behind the commitment to his practice. Dr. Ben was born on his family farm in Fife Lake Saskatchewan. He was the second youngest of nine. He had four sisters: Irene Yacucha, Clara Johnston (deceased), Edna Lutz (deceased), Pearl MacDonald (deceased) and four brothers Adam (deceased), Harvey, John, and George. With farming in his blood, Dr. Ben was determined to have a farm of his own. He slowly built his farm, Rock Garden Ranch, while managing a busy practice and raising a young family. It was here also that he continue to grow is love for gardening. With great pride and pleasure Dr. Ben generously picked, washed, and bagged a variety of vegetables to drop off for people in the community. Dr. Ben was a true farm boy with big dreams to match his ambition. Very simply put, he was the most genuine seed planter. He planted a seed that grew into a tree to shelter and protected us. He planted a seed that became an apple, a haskap berry, an ear of corn, or a potato to feed us. He planted his seed of knowledge and it grew in all of us. Dr. Ben’s curiosity and pursuit of knowledge guided him to realizing his dreams of expanding his farm. Always growing and evolving. Both cattle and goats have called Rock Garden Ranch home but at present time, only the buffalo roam. His latest ideas were in a hunting lodge, which is almost complete! After 43 years of Veterinarian practice Dr. Ben retired and took on a new role as papa. His grandchildren were his heart and joy. There is no denying that these little people were the center of his world. Time spent at papa’s house was plentiful but still very special, filed with creative play, many treats, and of course, “skinny” pancakes. One of Dr. Ben’s favorite sayings was “look forward not back; head up not down; nose to the grindstone and shoulder to the wheel.” And so goes the incredible story of an incredible man until we see our Ben, dad, and papa again. We love you and we miss you. We will carry you with us as we look forward; we will look up and see you shinning on us; and we will do our best to live out your legacy of hard work and generosity. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and dear friend. On the morning of March 17th 2018, Darlene passed away peacefully, surrounded by family after a lengthy battle with cancer. Darlene was born on Nov 11th, 1950 in Tisdale, Sk to Wilfred and Hannah Pratt. She grew up in Bjorkdale on the family farm and thoroughly enjoyed helping out. Whether it was plucking chickens, planting the family garden, or learning to bake and prepare meals alongside her mother. She met the love of her life Garry in the summer of ’69 and was married shortly after on April 4th, 1970. They began their life together raising their two sons, Derek and Lance. Darlene spent many weekends attending and supporting her boys in many sports whether it be hockey or ball. The boys grew very fond of her cooking skills and loved the taste of Darlene’s fresh cooked fish and deer steak, always leaving an empty plate. In 1984, Darlene became employed as a caregiver at the Lanigan Cooperative Daycare, where she remained working for an incredible 31 years until her health declined in 2014. Her natural ability led her to be adored by many little ones, she always had a special way with them, especially when it came to the babies. She was like a baby whisperer or a loving mother hen, so gentle and comforting. The grandkids loved spending time with their grandma. In particular, having sleepovers and watching movies, to playing board games and going for bike rides, creating many treasured memories with her. Some of Darlene’s favorite pastimes included watching TV, mainly her soaps, game shows and curling. She also enjoyed playing cards or bingo with her friends, and VLT’s on payday. Last but not least, fishing at the lake. She could out fish anyone when given the chance and spent many summers at the lake with family doing just that. Darlene’s genuine love was her family. She was a devoted wife, an extremely proud parent and grandparent. Darlene will always be remembered as a generous warm-hearted, kind-loving person and she will forever hold a place in our hearts. She will be dearly missed by her two sons, Derek (Jennifer) Fisher; daughters Courtney, Bree and Megan, Lance (Cheryl) Fisher; daughters Jessica (Jamie) Young; children Veda, Jace, and Nash, Kirsten; children Ryker and Skylar, and Lacey Fisher; Brothers John Pratt, Irv (Priscilla) Pratt, Mel (Penny) Pratt.
