www.watrousheritage.ca A number of interested individuals began meeting in the Fall of 2011 toward the establishment of a Heritage Centre and Museum for the Watrous area. As of March 5, 2012, the Town of Watrous established the Board tasked with preserving the history of Watrous & area, and with the goal of putting up a facility to house artifacts and archives.

And so at present the Watrous Heritage Centre exists as an online "Virtual Heritage Centre" on this website, preserving documents & pictures, with the hope of eventually housing them in a brand new facility at Watrous, SK. Visit the section of this website referred to as "The Plan" to view progress on plans for the new facility.

George and Marlene Squires have become the first members of the Founder's Club, a tier designated for those donating $50,000 or more toward the Heritage Centre. George said. "While we no longer live in Watrous, we return frequently and our roots are in Watrous. We both grew up in the Watrous and the Venn area, went to school in Watrous and still consider it as home." George's parents were active with Town committees and his father Doug worked at the CBK transmitter. Marlene's (Dahl) parents farmed in the Venn district and her father Albert also had a hardware business in Watrous and served on Watrous Town Council. Watrous - Manitou Beach Heritage Centre, Watrous, SK, S0K 4T0, Saskatchewan, Manitou Beach, CBK Radio, Museum, Potash

A HOME FOR OUR HISTORY: Dedicated to Preserving our History. The exciting endeavor of creating a Heritage Centre to serve Watrous, Manitou Beach and surrounding area, has been in the works for 5 years and is set to become a reality. The Heritage Board has now begun a capital campaign for the purchase and renovation of the Provincial Building (SaskWater) on Watrous’ Main Street. The vision is to create exhibit spaces, archival storage and work areas, as well as a gallery/travelling exhibit area. It will not replicate the great pioneer type museums already in existence, but focus on the rich history specific to this area. For more information about the campaign, please visit the Heritage website by clicking the photo. For donations, please contact Kathy Bergen 306-946-2061 or email gkbergen@sasktel.net. Donations are eligible as charitable when made payable through the Town of Watrous.

The Prairies were not an easy place to be a homesteader. Few trees to use for building homes, extremes in temperatures to endure, fires, storms, insects, vast distances, neglect - to name a few difficulties. Here are some disasters and hardships previous generations endured while settling the prairies.

Prairie Towns is a fascinating site with hundreds of postcard pictures of towns in the late 1800s and early 1900s. When Kodak issued an affordable portable camera in 1906 they could also develop the photos right onto a postcard. The negatives were the size of the card so the pictures could be clear and detailed. They give amazing views of early prairie towns.

A bird's eye view. There is a wonderful series of aerial photos of Sask farms and communities taken in the 1950s by "Howdy" McPhail, who was from PA area and was a fighter pilot in WW2. They can be found at Sask History Online. (You can zoom in very close on that website. There are other views as well.) Here are a few to check out.

Another group of buildings in early prairie towns were the hotels. Often, but not always, they were situated near the rail line. If one is not still standing today, chances are it succumbed to fire. Interesting how the name Manitou is associated with many of the hotels in this area. Lots of memories for visitors and locals alike!

The Tulip Festival in Ottawa commemorates the historic Royal gift of tulips from the Dutch to Canadians in 1945. The Canadian troops were honored for their role in the liberation of the Netherlands in WW1. Also during the war, Dutch Princess Margaret was born in Ottawa - the only royal personage ever born in North America. There is a special Canada 150 tulip to watch for this year. They will be featured at the Festival in Ottawa in May but were also available around the country last fall to be planted. They represent the unique Canadian Flag. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5OTNv0xP5w
