Earlier today, we learned that the King of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej, has passed away after over 70 years of reign. Not only was he the longest serving head of state in the world, but was much beloved amongst the Thai people. Immensely popular, His Majesty was not only active in the lives of his people, but was also an avid lover of Muay Thai. Every year on the 5th of December, His Majesty’s birthday, the King’s Cup is held in his honor. Held in Bangkok’s Sanam Luang Park, facing the King's Palace, both the King’s Cup Crown and Belt are donated by His Majesty. Fighters fight tournament style, with the champion having to win 3 fights in one day. We hope that with this news comes understanding of Thai culture and customs. During this time, Thailand will undergo a period of mourning for their King. As for us, we give our condolences to the Thai people and those affected by this event.

This week we've taught you the Push Kick, or Teep as it's known in Thai. A defensive or offensive weapon, the Teep is a great way to keep an overzealous opponent at bay, or to herd them into a corner. It might be a bit difficult at first to properly throw the Teep, as not everyone has the initial flexibility, but with practice it will come with ease. Keep up the hard work and you'll see much progress!

This week we teach our students the knee or "Khao" in Thai. The knee is the spear of Muay Thai, driving the force of our hips into our opponent. This technique builds off the stance we taught last week. The knee requires a strong stance and a strong foundation to throw effectively and your instructors will give you those tools. Keep up the hard work and you will see your growth in this sport.

This week in class we learn how to stand and how to strike with our hands. Our stance is the foundation of all our strikes and weapons. Without a strong stance, even the strongest person will not be able to throw their best punches and kicks. With our hands we learn our jab and our cross. Both are fundamental strikes, seen among even the most experienced of professionals. The bread and butter of many combinations, the jab and the cross will be the beginnings of your journey.

Plank

Sawadeekhrap S&C'ers Excellent first class today - you guys are well on your way to becoming machines. As mentioned earlier, this week will focus on developing core stability through isometric torso exercises. The plank, side bridge, and bird dog are underrated tools to develop this characteristic when utilized with the correct cues. Check out the videos below for a quick tutorial on the postural and motor control cues we talked about. You can do these movements every day with no negative effects on your recovery for your Muay Thai workouts. In fact, doing so will ultimately enhance performance. Try 5x10 sec holds of each movement (per side for side bridge and bird dog) every day. Focus on exaggerating your bracing cues. The quality of your final rep should be as good as your first one. Cheryl Ip, one of our senior students at her blue shorts test. She displayed great enthusiasm and perseverance for such a tough test. Blue shorts represent an understanding of the fundamentals of Muay Thai. As our Muay Thai classes begin, a message to our new students: even the best of fighters started by learning their stance and how to throw their punch. We are excited to see how you all progress as we teach you the Science of the Eight Limbs.
