A Letter to Toronto's Creative Community. The Heard and The Sawubona Project are about a few things.. Firstly, like most of Spoke N' Heard's projects its about giving a platform for artists who strive to tell stories that mean something. For young aspiring and seasoned creatives alike to challenge themselves, exploring deeper levels of production. Connect with Toronto's most AMAZING fans & supporters, and grow! Secondly it's a statement, that the black arts community is vast, talented and highly influential. Photographers like Taha Muharuma and SoTeeOh, visionaries like Dr. Kenneth Montague, Canada's premier black art collector, they have SO MUCH of an impact on art in Canada. These are the bulldozers, the trailblazers, and community is central in their work! It's important that we celebrate them, that we support them in as many ways as possible. Who else can we count on to tell our stories? To build museums and galleries where our history can be preserved? Toronto's artist's are so special because many balance being and artist while being youth workers, policy writers, activists, social workers, entrepreneurs, change-makers.. We're people who know intimately the necessity for change on a grass roots and global scale, and they've decided to use a lens; a blank page; their heart, to enact that change. That's beautiful to me. That's sacred. But let's face it, its HARD WORK being an artist in Toronto. We hope to make it a bit easier. Spoke N' Heard is a team of young people of colour ranging in age from 18 to 33. I wish I could share these angels with every organization in the city. These are passionate, revolutionary, creative, builders of a collective dream. To be a capable and well-resourced platform. To be there for each other and to help each others dreams come true. To have an impact, as best we can. I wan't to invite you to come witness The Heard Festival. 5 Events, each with a unique and creative twist. This is the culmination of 5 and a half years of quiet hard work. We've quietly raised more than $150 000 over the years and invested it all back into Toronto's arts community, working with over 200 artists and producing almost 50 events and 200+ free youth workshops across the city. And we're just getting started! 6 years ago I was a 17 year old boy, frantic with ideas and no direction. Spoke N' Heard came to me in one tidal wave, and idea so vast it might have washed me away several times. Today I'm blessed with a purpose, to serve my community in as many ways as I know how. My heart is light, and filled with gratitude for the privilege to lead this movement. Come celebrate with us. One <3 Toronto. -JV
