One of the things I find as chicken owner is that I spend a lot of time debunking myths. One myth that is common is that brown eggs are healthier than white eggs. Actually, there are no difference, nutritionally, between eggs. It's the breed of chicken that determines the colour of shell. Inside it's still a clear white (until cooked!) and a yellow yoke. Where did this myth come from? Well, my best guess is that in grocery stores there were more white eggs than brown and people who bought brown eggs got them from farms where free range was common. So perhaps the thought was that brown eggs were healthier! I would say that free-range, local eggs are better for you because of what the chicken eats, and better for your local economy, but in the grocery store, all that is different is the price! Hmm, if white eggs are cheaper than brown eggs, I wonder what I could get for GREEN chicken eggs? :-) And let's not forget duck eggs... What other egg myths have you heard?

It's bittersweet here at the Littlest Pastures. 4 sheep have returned to my Dad's farm. While our barn was a bit tight for 8 sheep, chickens & ducks, I'm sad to see them go. I guess I'll just have to visit! Alby, Annie, Amelia & JP are still here!
