Jr Schooners will be hosting a Soap Box Derby on all Shelburnes major events with the Grand Championship being held at the Fall Fair.

Hello everyone, Here's a copy of this years derby car rules for building your own car. Look them over carefully as there are a few changes from last year. Please feel free to ask any questions you might have. Registration forms and race rules will be out in the next few days. Forms will include a copy of car rules. HOBBY STREET CAR CONSTRUCTION RULES Basic overview: Max length ……...….. 84 inches Max axle width …...…36inches Max body height …... 20 inches Max body width ….… 20 inches Max wheel diameter ..10" … Minimum wheel diameter 6 **No Bicycle tires permitted** FLOORBOARD Must be a minimum of 1.5 inches thick Must be made using plywood or butchers block laminate composite Remember that max car length of 84" so adjust board length and width to all for body thickness when mounted. No fibreglass wrapping of floorboard No imbedding of weight or steel spine stiffener BODY NO metal may be used to frame the body skeleton NO metal allowed as body panel or re-enforcement NO windshields or protruding ornamentation or handles Body may be constructed of wood or wood composite This division requires driver to sit in the car in a lean forward fashion. NO LAY BACK DESIGN Body may be laminated with fibreglass If fibreglass is used to finish body exterior surface it may not wrap under floorboard Body panels must be affixed to frame with glue and screws – NO NAILS       Body must be screwed securely to floorboard using 1.5" min length drywall or similar type screws AXLES Axles may not exceed 36" in width (REMEMBER OVERALL WIDTH OF AXLE CAN NOT EXCEED 36" WITH WHEELS ATTACHED) Axles may be created using round stock not more then 1" in diameter, or square stock not more then 1" square. Spindles (end of axles for wheel mounting) must be 1/2:" in diameter. Axles may not rotate Front Axles must be mounted using a Kingpin center mount, NO AUTOMOTIVE STYLE FRONT AXLES SYSTEMS Rear axle may be bolted directly to rear of floorboard in a non adjustable fashion or using a method to maintain triangulation. Axles may be installed above floorboard or under it. STEERING Steering must be a wheel or tiller system connected to the front axle using steel cable. (No rope or other type of cable allowed) Use of steering adjusters recommended but not mandatory. Steering cable must be solidly affixed/attached to the axle and clamped in a fashion to ensure separation does not occur. If turnbuckles are used for steering adjustment they must have a safety wire threaded thru them to ensure no separation occurs in case of a failure. No foot operated steering systems allowed Steering radius limited to 1", measured at end of axle All Hobby Street cars must have steering stop blocks installed. The body opening can not be used as a stop block.     BRAKES Brakes must not cause damage to track surface when applied A self designed system or plunger brake system is allowed Contact surface of brake with track must be a rubber or rubber compound material. Brake system must be capable of stopping the car in short / safe fashion. If a wheel jam/compression system is used it must operate on both rear wheels in a fashion that does not cause car to spin out. NO SINGLE Wheel systems. WHEELS Wheels used in the Hobby Street division must not be more then 10" in diameter or less then 6" in diameter Bearings limited to ½ " ID Bearing lubrication is allowed but dry Graphite or lubricants containing graphite is not allowed. NO PNEUMATIC tire wheels. NO PLASTC THREADED wheels are allowed Wheels tire material must be of rubber or rubber like material. All cars must have 4 wheels that are in contact with the track at the same time. Wheels must be attached to axle spindles with a spring clip, cotter pins, no threaded wheel nuts permitted No chemical substance can be applied to rubber to alter its hardness. WEIGHT No added weight allowed to cars ADDITIONAL RULES Minimum driver age 7 years of age Regardless of driver age their must be able to demonstrate and maintain the ability to control their car in a safe fashion. All drivers must wear a helmet with face mask, eg. hockey or baseball helmet with face mask
