Gastroesophageal reflux, also known as acid reflux, occurs when the stomach contents reflux or back up into the esophagus and/or mouth. People who experience heartburn at least two to three times a week may have gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. The most common symptom of GERD, heartburn, affects 10-20% of those in developed countries. Heartburn is experienced as a burning sensation in the center of the chest, which sometimes spreads to the throat. Less common symptoms include: ●Pain in the upper abdomen ●Non-burning chest pain ●Difficulty swallowing or food getting stuck ●Painful swallowing ●Persistent hoarseness ●Chronic cough, new onset asthma, or asthma only at night ●Regurgitation of foods/fluids; taste of acid in the throat ●Sense of a lump in the throat ●Worsening dental disease ●Recurrent lung infections (called pneumonia) ●Waking up with a choking sensation Saskatchewan pharmacists can help offer lifestyle advice and prescribe medications to manage uncomplicated GERD, as well as assess for alarm symptoms requiring referral to a doctor. Stop into Jae's Pharmacy if you have questions about acid reflux or alternatives for treatment.

Acne, the most common skin condition in North America, affects an estimated 85% of adolescents. There are four main events which may lead to the development of acne: 1. Blockage of the hair follicle with skin cells and sebum (an oily substance that lubricates hair and skin). 2. Enlargement of the sebaceous glands around the face, neck, chest and back during adolescence, resulting in increased sebum production. 3. Overgrowth of a bacteria which normally lives on the skin. 4. Inflammation as a result of bacterial overgrowth and other factors, leading to rupture of the hair follicle and development of a red and tender pimple. Effective acne treatments are available to treat existing pimples and prevent new ones from developing. In addition, cosmetic treatments can help to reduce scarring and changes in skin color caused by acne. There is no single best treatment for acne, and combinations of treatments are sometimes recommended. Ask your Jae's Pharmacy pharmacist about treatment options, including both over-the-counter and prescription alternatives.
