Orange Shirt Day, September 29th, 2017: Every Child Matters The 2017 Orange Shirt Day falls on a Saturday. On September 29th (Friday) the Salmo Secondary staff and students will be showing their support for orange shirt day by wearing orange and learning about the history of residential schools. The aim of the day is to highlight the importance of creating a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment for all students at the school. On September 30, 2017, join hundreds of others across Canada and wear an orange shirt to honour and bring awareness to the experiences of residential school students. Orange Shirt day began in British Columbia in 2013 when a residential school survivor, Phyllis Webstad, shared her story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day at a residential school. Since then, Orange Shirt Day has become an opportunity for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation, anti-bullying, and anti-racism conversation and action.
