Forest School is an educational approach focused on regular and repeated access to the same natural place and experiential, play and place-based learning. Forest School is about promoting a deep connection to nature and to one another through play and exploration. The types of activities at Forest School vary depending upon many factors including the seasons, the weather, the natural materials available, the tools provided and most importantly the interests of the children. Activities typically include, but are not limited to, building shelters, tracking animals, playing games, climbing trees, drawing and exploring. The role of the educator is to support and extend the children's passions. Forest School is a great way to learn for every child. Whether they prefer to calmly draw by themselves or are the type of kid who can't sit down, everyone is welcome and everyone's special personalities are what makes Forest School such a dynamic and fun experience for all of those involved.

West Coast Forest School is run by Andrew Bond, a certified Forest School practitioner and a public school teacher in the Victoria school district.

Our Forest School will be run as a complement to regular school hours with monthly half-day weekend sessions as well as full week sessions for Spring Break and Summer.

Children age 5-11
Half Day weekend session $25 (Saturday 9-1)
Full day Spring Break or Summer Session $180/week

We are happy to announce that we will be offering a brand new program starting November 2017! The program is called “Sit Spot Club” and will be run for one weekend afternoon per month of the school year with the exception of March. (where we should have a full two weeks in forest!) The “sit spot” is the most foundational core routine used in Forest School and other related styles of learning in the nature connection movement. In the program, participants will be asked to pick a “sit spot” of their own somewhere close to their home. This can be as simple as picking a corner of the backyard under a tree or as elaborate as finding a spot on or near a local river, stream or mountain. That being said, the best sit spots are one that you go to! Simple is often better. During the program sessions students will hear inspiring stories from the leaders about “sit spot” experiences and hear and share their own stories. There is really no way to describe the amazing window into the wonder and magic of nature that gets opened to people who learn how to sit silently in one place for an extended period of time. Of course this won’t happen overnight; an extended period of time for a five year old might start at 5 minutes whereas older kids may get up to a half an hour or more. Birds will land at your feet, you will scare squirrels as they almost scurry right into you and you could experience an infinite number of other quiet adventures in your own little secret spot. Participants will be asked questions and practice activities that will help guide and deepen their “sit spot” experience. Sessions will also include energetic nature based games as well as practice with practical Forest School skills such as whittling, sawing, knots and fire building! If your child can’t wait until Spring Break for a little taste of Forest School then this is the perfect solution! We would welcome any participant from age 5-12 but experience in Forest School or “Sit Spots” is highly recommended. Please get in touch if you are interested and would like more information. $10/Session (2-3 hours)

Happy August everyone! It has been a very long time since we have written a post, and we apologize for the massive delay. We were continuing to hold out hope for getting into a Saanich park for the summer, but it will not be happening before the start of school. We are very disappointed we were unable to create a summer program, but are still working on sorting something out for the school year. As of right now our next planned session with be Spring Break 2018. We hope everyone has been enjoying this gorgeous weather and getting out into nature at every possible opportunity!

Spring Break Camp Updates: Wow, what a wonderful two weeks we shared with some wonderful Forest Schoolers! Our Spring Break camps went very well, with lots of laughter, exploration, team-work and skill building activities. Some highlights from our Week 1 Camp were finding a massive puddle and building "Frog Village", whittling, and making tarp shelters in the rain. Some highlights from our Week 2 Camp were climbing trees, searching for crabs at the beach, skipping stones, playing games, and spending time writing or drawing in our nature journals. Thank you to everyone who took part in our Spring Break Camps, and we hope to share more nature experiences with you in the future!
