Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, a period of spiritual discipline. Lent occurs 40 days leading up to Easter (Sundays are excluded, because every Sunday is a celebration of Christ's resurrection). Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of blessing ashes made from palm branches blessed on the previous year's Palm Sunday. During the Ash Wednesday service, ashes are rubbed on one’s forehead in the sign of a cross symbolizing one's identity with Chirst Jesus. Lent is intended to be a time of self-denial, moderation, and the forsaking of consuming activities and habits that draw one's attention away from Christ.
