Upper Canada Playhouse was established in 1983 and began life in a giant tent in the woods on the outskirts of Upper Canada Village. Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, The Playhouse has become one of the most acclaimed professional theatre companies in Eastern Ontario.
Audiences come from the many Seaway Valley communities as well as from Ottawa, Brockville, Upper New York State and Montreal to take in a show at the Upper Canada theatre and leave laughing. The Playhouse features some the finest professional actors, designers and directors in the country. The small, intimate theatre gives you the feeling of being right on top of the action, so you won’t miss a beat.

Laughter is the best medicine, and Upper Canada Playhouse serves up a funny and memorable prescription of musicals and comedies from April through December. The theatre season kicks off in the spring with a musical concert featuring live musicians and bands. Summertime brings a four-show comedy series ranging from the slapstick fun of a farce to a variety of entertaining classic and modern situational plays that look at life through a comic lens. Job Posting: Technical Director/Head Carpenter Theatre: Upper Canada Playhouse, Morrisburg, Ontario Dates of Employment: April 15-September 30, 2018 (with option to extend to December 23) Theatre Description Upper Canada Playhouse is a professional theatre company currently in its 35th season and located in the Eastern Ontario community of Morrisburg, operating under the jurisdiction of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association. It is a mid-sized theatre company with a season running April through December consisting of Spring and Fall live concerts which are toured in, a flagship 4-show summer series June through September and a Christmas production November and December, all of which are built, rehearsed and produced in-house. Job Description The Technical Director/Head Carpenter position is a blended position responsible for heading the season’s set construction and the supervision, co-ordination and execution of all production aspects including lights, sound, props and running crew. Proven on-the-job set construction skills and experience are essential for this position. The TD/Head Carpenter position will be responsible to the Artistic Director and will work closely with the theatre’s designers, stage management team and turnaround staff in the production of the theatre’s 4-show summer series. Required Skills Successful candidates will have trained at a technical theatre production institution AND/OR have comparable extensive technical professional theatre experience. It is essential that candidates have strong on-the-job stage carpentry skills and experience and be familiar with all power tools and set construction equipment. They will also have demonstrated proficiency with all theatre production aspects such as QLab, Autocad and an ETC Element or comparable lighting board. The candidate should also demonstrate a good work ethic, excellent and proven problem-solving and communication skills and the ability to manage time and schedules effectively in meeting deadlines and achieving goals. They should have proven leadership skills and work effectively with designers, directors, stage management and other production staff to successfully execute the technical demands of a fast-paced professional summer theatre.
