Terrorism... A disease and the cause By: Emad Barsoum I still remember when we were children playing outdoors in front of our houses, forty, fifty years ago, we were living and playing in peace, harmony, love and innocence. No fear of danger that might happen to us except for tripping or falling while playing and get injured, catching cold, or chickenpox or measles from other friends. But I also remember one day when I returned home after playing with my friends in the streets around the neighbourhood I heard my father talking over the phone saying - “Sheikh Mohammed El Dahabi was assassinated”, and then I saw my father rushing to work, to the newspaper he used to work for. While he was stepping out the doorway I called him; - Dad, what is the meaning of assassinated!!? For the first time, I saw my father puzzled trying to explain to me a word that was never used in our language before, and never that he expected it to rise to the surface of our long talks we had together while he was teaching me about love, friendship, honesty, peace, principles, truth, beauty…. While he was teaching me life. He turned to me and said; later my son, later.. Later, I had to find out on my own that this was the first crime in the name of a religion that I became aware of, an act of terror just because two different ways of looking at the same religion, Sheikh Mohamed El-Dahaby Minister of Endowments in Egypt in 1977 was kidnapped and assassinated by the fundamentalist and extremist group at that time “Al Takfeer wa Al Hijra” Afterwards the words assassination, killing, bombing, terrorising became part of the world’s daily language and always associated with a conflict of two religions or a conflict within the same religion! We became accustomed to news about terrorism as learning about a viral outbreak somewhere in the world, nevertheless, many people never crossed their minds the fact that such acts could take place in our home, Canada, they forgot that Terrorism is very similar to a fatal virus. However, most diseases caused by viruses are known and some could be cured or contained... While Terrorism is a virus that no one knows when it will happen? Where? And above all by whom!!? After the shocking news of the cowardly attack on the Islamic cultural centre in Quebec City that left 6 dead and 5 wounded, we came to realize that Canada is not secluded from the acts of terror that are carried out due to religious or ideological differences, we may call it hate crimes, intolerance but this is terrorism. No ideology or belief is better than the other or should be more dominant or followed, no ideology should have any privileges over another, the supreme level of humanity is accepting the other. Building walls to protect an ideology or a religion is not going to save it, but by reconsidering and facing the realities, by confronting our fears not by hiding our heads in the sand and thinking that we are safe and away, search for the causes then we can have peace.
