Another win for our artificial nest burrows! The eight foot long weeping tile tunnel protects the burrow from being dug up by any predators (in this case a fox 🦊). Both owls were seen on camera shortly after the fox gave up and moved on from this burrow!

Over the past few weeks we have had some pretty cute visitors checking out the owls burrows. Each burrow has a trail camera set up at the entrance so we can easily monitor the owls themselves, any predators, and any prey items the owls bring back to the burrow!

Yesterday we welcomed Thea, a female Burrowing Owl from the Saskatchewan Burrowing Owl Interpretive center located in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. We thank the wonderful people at SBOIC for lending Thea to us for the summer. Fingers crossed we will have another breeding pair!

We did it! 12 hours of birding for conservation! We had a great day with fantastic weather. Some highlights were observing two young Great Horned Owls who are about to leave the nest, a nesting Ferruginous Hawk, and finding a Chestnut collared longspur nest. Thank you all to have supported our fundraiser so far. Though our "Big Day" has wrapped up we can continue to collect donations until the end of the summer. 🦉

Our Birdathon is Tomorrow! We're kicking things off at 5:30am and going straight through till dusk! Please consider donating through the link below. All donations $20 or more receive a tax receipt and funds go directly to our program in Manitoba! Thanks for the support 🦉
Today we installed some artificial nest burrows (ANB's). ANB's create protected homes for Burrowing Owls who require a burrow to roost and nest. We install ANB's throughout southwestern Manitoba in suitable habitat like pastureland (grazed) and hayland (short-cut) that have little to no trees or shrubs and ideally host ground squirrels. If you are interested in having us install ANB's on your land and you live in southwestern Manitoba, please contact us via email at mbburrowingowls@gmail.com.

Today we are conducting the first Burrowing Owl survey of the season! Throughout the summer Alex, Jessica, and Cassidy will all be conducting these surveys within the southwestern corner of Manitoba. In these surveys we are visiting suitable habitat (grazed, treeless, and has natural burrows) and then playing our male territorial call. We then will listen and look for any burrowing owls that might be hanging out in that area. If you are interested in our surveys, checkout our Snapchat (koko_theowl) for survey updates as well as other daily activities we will be doing throughout the summer!
And the winner is???? Damian Bro! We will send you a message to confirm your shirt size. Thanks to everyone for participating and keep following us for all your updates on Manitoba's Burrowing Owls!

The contest is over! We received over 200 new likes and 157 shares of our video! Thank you to everyone for participating. Tomorrow, we will post the winner of our Burrowing Owl shirt! In the meantime, Great news! A wild Burrowing Owl turned up last week near Dunrea, Manitoba. No bands, unfortunately, but still a wonderful sight! Here are a couple of photos of what appeared to be a female Burrowing Owl. We say "appeared" based on her behavior. Burrowing Owls are not sexually dimorphic. This means it's incredibly difficult to identify sex based on morphology (colour of feathers, size and weight).
