Town of Ladysmith
Description
Nestled on the eastern shores of spectacular Vancouver Island, Ladysmith has the warmth and charm of small town living with a full range of amenities. Ladysmith is a growing community (population 8,077 in 2013) located just 88 km (55 miles) north of Victoria and 23 km (14 km) south of Nanaimo.
It is a pleasure to welcome you to our Town through our Facebook page. Your comments, questions and thoughts are welcome -- and encouraged. We want to hear from you! Please keep all comments respectful and on topic. Comments deemed inappropriate or promotional in nature will be removed.
A 2003 National Communities In Bloom award winner, Ladysmith offers world-class outdoor recreational opportunities; a renowned trail system through picturesque forests; first-class shopping and dining in the historic downtown area; and fun-filled waterfront activities at pristine Transfer Beach. Ladysmith is known for its abundance of community spirit - share in the excitement at any one of our legendary annual celebrations, such as the Festival of Lights beginning on the last Thursday of November or Ladysmith Days in August.
Ladysmith is renowned for its wide-spread commitment to sustainability and green development. Several recent environmental initiatives have resulted in provincial and national awards for the Town. The Community Sustainability Vision (adopted in 2009) and the new Sustainability Action Plan put the community on a well-defined path towards its very ambitious and admirable vision for the future.
The Town of Ladysmith is governed by an elected Council made up of a Mayor and six Council members. Municipal elections are held every four years. The next scheduled election is in the fall of 2018.

For the Record: Some Facts about the Town property at 900 Russell Road. The Town of Ladysmith intends to sell our property at 900 Russell Road in order to invest in the future of our community. We have received questions about the property, its original intention, and future park development. We have also become aware that there are different opinions about the intended use of the property. To help set the record straight, below are a few key pieces of information. > The Town of Ladysmith purchased the property at 900 Russell Road in 2003 when it was listed by a realtor. At the time, Council thought that a portion of the property might be used for future playing fields. The Town paid the full listed asking price of $190,000 for the property. The only condition on the sale was that Council approval was required. This condition was removed one week after the purchase offer. > At the time the Town purchased it, the property was zoned R-1 (Suburban Residential). It is still zoned R-1 (called Single Dwelling Residential since the Zoning Bylaw was updated in 2014.) The property has never been zoned as parkland, nor was it ever established as a park by the Town. > There are 33 + acres of property to the south and west of 900 Russell Road that are zoned P-3 – Natural Park. The Town acquired all that property specifically to ensure that there is green space in the south end as other sites continue to be developed. >The property has been for sale since 2010. Although not always actively marketed, it has been listed on the town's website for the whole period For more information, call City Hall 250.245.6400.or visit www.ladysmith.ca
Excited to see Food Trucks coming to Transfer Beach starting on Saturday!
