The Huntsman Fundy Discovery Aquarium is a 20,000 square foot facility which houses a 218 seat theatre, multipurpose boardroom, upper and lower level public aquarium. We love our seals so much that we couldn't resist doing something a little special for them this week. Our boys Loki and Snorkel practice target training on a regular basis with Katie Anne, our Aquarist. This is a positive-reinforcement training technique that keeps them mentally and physically active and engaged with our staff. Nose-touching is one of the natural behaviours harbour seals exhibit in the wild that we reinforce. Katie Anne has a very special relationship with our seals so we decided to show them a little extra love. Happy Valentine's Day, from our very splashy family to yours!

We are so pleased to have been featured in this article by the CBC! Two of our scientists, Amber Garber and Claire Goodwin, spent some time talking about our Women and Girls in Science campaign that highlighted a few of our brilliant female scientists this weekend. We’d like to thank the CBC for helping raise the profile of this worthy cause!
In these final hours of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2018, the Huntsman Marine Science Centre would like to acknowledge our inspiring staff of #WomenInScience, and extend a heartfelt THANK YOU for all the amazing work that you do. Together, we are building a stronger, gender-equal workforce and a brighter future for girls interested in pursuing careers in science.
Today is the day! The International Day of Women and Girls in Science - an opportunity to take a stand and break the stereotypes that hold back women and girls in scientific fields. Before sharing the results of our company-wide photo shoot (stay tuned for that later today), we would like to introduce our final team member to be showcased this year, Leslie Gault: Leslie is a project biologist for the Huntsman Marine Science Centre. In this role, she manages the Marine Debris Program, plans and coordinates scientific workshops and courses through the Huntsman’s Professional Development Series, and prepares scientific reports and grant applications. #WomenInScience #WomenInSTEM #GenderEquality
To celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science tomorrow, we are continuing our showcase of women in science at the Huntsman with a woman that many of you may know from her tireless work to create a safer, greener world. Plastics and other debris entering our oceans has a huge impact on marine life, and our courageous leader in reducing marine debris is Krista Beardy: Krista is the Marine Debris Program Coordinator at HMSC. She has been tasked with the implementation of a marine debris reduction strategy and works to raise awareness by promoting environmental stewardship through public and industry education initiatives. She is also involved in microplastics research in the coastal sediments in the southwestern Bay of Fundy region. #WomenInScience #WomenInSTEM #GenderEquality #DebrisFreeFundy
In the interest of meeting development goals, the global community has been making an effort in the last 15 years to inspire and engage women and girls in science. One of the initiatives to achieve this is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science - a campaign that the Huntsman is so proud to support. Continuing with our showcase of the inspiring women that help drive the Huntsman Marine Science Centre, we’d like to introduce Frauke Nijhof: Coming to Saint Andrews from Europe, Frauke fell in love with the rugged waters of the Bay of Fundy. She completed her B.Sc. in Biology at UNB Fredericton and became involved with the Huntsman during her honours research into a novel treatment against sea lice. She now works at the Huntsman’s Atlantic Reference Centre, where she identifies benthic sea creatures so small that most people do not even realize they are there, and this is used to analyze the condition and health of an area. #WomenInScience #WomenInSTEM #GenderEquality
This Sunday, 11 February, is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science: a global initiative with the intent to achieve gender equality through full and equal access to science for women and girls. In celebration of this day, the Huntsman Marine Science Centre would like to showcase just a few of the strong and amazing women that make our organization possible. The first of our team highlights is Cynthia Callahan: Cynthia has worked all over Canada and in the US in Aquariums, the aquaculture industry, and research. With a Masters in Fish Biology and experience in education, she adores managing the Aquarium because it marries her two loves of marine science and education. She is responsible for all aspects of the Aquarium operations including marketing, animals, maintenance, and staffing. #WomenInScience #WomenInSTEM #GirlBoss
