Celebrating Grandparents as Memory Makers
Happy Grandparents Day tomorrow <3
Montreal Mount Royal Stake Newsletter September 2016 *Message From the Stake Presidency The Blessings of Work The first weekend in September is a long weekend due to the Federal Holiday called Labour Day. Labour Day was instituted to celebrate and honor the labour movement and workers whose contributions are at the backbone of the strength, prosperity, and well being of our country. The Lord also values Work and has commanded each of us both man and women to eat our bread by the “sweat of our brow” (Moses 5:1) In fact our Heavenly Father works and glories in His work. “For behold, this is my work and my glory – to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.” (Moses 1:39) To work, and enjoy our work, is a great blessing, whether it is the work of salvation in which we should all be anxiously engaged, or whether it is working to provide for ourselves and our families. Work is a fundamental part of our mortal journey and experience; those who seek to escape work and live in idleness rob themselves of some of the richest blessings we will receive while on earth. The work of building our marriage and family relationships are among the most treasured experiences we will have in life. It is a joy to participate in the work of the Lord and to see His hand as He works through us to help change the hearts of His children. May we each be grateful for the opportunity to work! We thank the Lord for work and for workers, on this Labour Day we celebrate each of you who work so hard to do your best to follow our Heavenly Father. Love, The Stake Presidency *Whistle While You Work! See the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square perform (as only they can!) a medley of the beloved classics "Whistle While You Work" and "Heigh Ho" from Disney’s animated Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, at their 2014 Pioneer Day concert. *Observing the National Day of Service with the LaSalle Food Drive The Prime Minister established Canada’s Annual National Day of Service in 2011 as a day for Canadians perform good works, in remembrance of those who were lost, and to honor those who sacrificed themselves for others, on September 11, 2001. To commemorate the National Day of Service, our stake will again join with the H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Effectively) Food Bank, the St John Brebeuf Parish, and the LaSalle Knights of Columbus to conduct the sixth annual LaSalle Food Drive. Our goal is to again re-stock the shelves of the H.O.P.E. Food Bank for the next year. While this single community effort is H.O.P.E.’s main source of non-perishable food, its volunteers work daily to provide emergency food supplies to any residents of LaSalle who may find themselves in need. The food drive consists of TWO events. Sat Sept 10th: door flyer/bag distribution. Meet at the stake center at 9 am to pick up a route and the flyers. We could be done in less than 2 hours, depending on how many people we have. Sat Sept 17th: food collection. Be at the stake center to sign in at 9 am. Drivers with cars are especially needed. There will be a short opening exercises before the teams go out to pick up the bags of food. Lunch will be provided. Bring your families and friends and come participate in this opportunity to literally follow the Savior’s command to “Feed my sheep.” *Church sponsored public lecture at McGill University It has been one year since the Canadian government released the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) recommendations – the 94 Calls to Action that were the result of 6 years of dialogue, three commissioners, and over 6,750 stories from indigenous residential school survivors and witnesses. The McGill Centre for Research on Religion and the Montreal Mount Royal Stake will host a lecture “Embracing Reconciliation” on Tues Sept 20th at 4 p.m. at McGill’s Birks Chapel (3520 University Street, Montreal, Quebec H3A 2A7) to discuss and address these Calls to Action. Invited guest speakers include Kahnawake Elder John Cree; LDS indigenous Professor John Borrows, Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Law at the University of Victoria; and Professor Rebecca Johnson, Academic Director of the Indigenous Law Research Unit at the University of Victoria. Professor Borrows says “Indigenous peoples have the right to self-determination in spiritual matters, including the right to practice, develop and teach their own spiritual and religious traditions, customs, and ceremonies.” He will address how individuals and religious communities can engage in reconciliation. People will be introduced to the history of the TRC and will leave with a sense of concrete things they can do to participate in the process of reconciliation, starting from where they are, and using the resources, time, and energy they possess. This informative lecture is open to the public, free of charge. *Changes in the Kirkland Ward Bishopric On Sunday, August 28th, Bishop Yves Limoges was released, along with his counselors Paul Arsenault and Kimball Olsen. We thank these brethren for their devoted service! Paul Arsenault was called to serve as the new bishop, with James Clarke and Ron Wong as his counselors. *Tis the Season... for the Primary Program! The annual children’s sacrament meeting presentation gives children an opportunity to share what they have learned in Primary. All Primary children ages 3 through 11 sing songs they have learned in sharing time. Children may also participate by reading or reciting scripture passages, giving talks, singing in small groups, and sharing their testimonies. Parents of Primary children, please spend some time at home helping them learn the songs and their spoken parts in preparation for the Primary Program in your ward (a great FHE activity!) *Stake Calendar Sept 10th: LaSalle Food Drive.
