Food & Friends Helps Students Get Ready for School As summer draws to an end, September brings the promise of new beginnings, especially for students. Hungry minds seek to fulfill hopes by learning about the world and themselves. Teachers and schools do whatever they can to enable them and remove the barriers that could stand in the way of achieving their dreams. The Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington Food & Friends (F&F) program provides students with a healthy breakfast, morning meal, snack or lunch. They support 106 nutrition programs (51 in Guelph) at both elementary and secondary schools in Dufferin, Wellington and Guelph. Research shows that the benefits of nutrition programs supported by F&F include students attending school more regularly, and are more likely to avoid illnesses, behavioral problems, and low achievement scores. These programs bring healthy food to hungry minds in a safe, convenient environment in order to maximize students’ potential to learn. The programs also offer an atmosphere for social inclusion among students who may otherwise feel marginalized. For some students, the food from the program will be their only meal of the day. According to one F&F student nutrition program coordinator, “We have a student that brings a bottle of coke and a bag of chips to school every day for lunch and he is now eating healthy fruits and vegetables from our nutrition program. The best part is he now asks for these healthier foods at home because it makes him feel better.” F&F will provide over 15,000 students (6850 in Guelph) with a healthy meal through the efforts of 900 volunteers in the 2016-17 school year. F&F wants to help all kids reach their potential by feeding healthy food to hungry minds so that they continue to hunger for knowledge and nothing else.
