Last week we had two special visitors at our Toronto office - Howard Archibald, our Aboriginal Affairs Coordinator based at the mine site, and his wife Linda. Howard and Linda led Aboriginal Awareness training sessions for the folks at our corporate office. The sessions included an introduction to the Medicine Wheel teachings along with Dream Catcher workshops where employees were taught the significance of dream catchers and got to make (and keep!) their own. Everyone enjoyed learning about these important aspects of aboriginal culture. Thank you Howard and Linda!

Thanks to Sylvina Rickard (pictured above on the left) our employees are staying warm when it’s a balmy -20°C at the mine. Sylvina Rickard is a Moose Cree Member from North Bay, Ontario who led a workshop at site last week where employees made their own pair of mittens. Caroline Normandeau, (pictured above on the right) and the rest of the group were taught how to cut and sew mittens using traditional Aboriginal techniques. This week, participants will touch up the liners, to make sure they’re extra warm!

We recently ran a contest in Cochrane for the holidays. Children from the community were asked to draw their favorite holiday memory and submit their picture for a chance to win some wonderful prizes and to be featured in our holiday advertisements. For the month of December, we're going to upload some of the beautiful winners and the honourable mentions. First up, this honorable mention got the 4th most votes by our judging panel and was created by Jaime Kidd (13) of Cochrane. Happy December 1st!

We wanted to provide an update on the blast that took place on Friday, June 3, 2016. This routine blast happened near the bottom of our pit and resulted in an orange plume of gas being released. The safety of our people and the environment are always the first priority and we work hard to prepare for the unique conditions of each and every blast. For this particular blast we had expected some gas to be generated and so we extended the blast radius to 1 km for personnel. While we expected some gas to be released, we did not expect the release to be so large. To avoid worry and as a matter of best practice, we quickly reported the gas to the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) and gathered personnel in our mine services facility building (MSF). Following the blast we began testing the air quality around MSF and the construction camp. Both tests came back reading zero. Blasts are a weekly occurrence at an operation the size of ours however sometimes situations like these can be distracting. Let’s continue to focus on working safely and working together.
