Good Friday. Despite his message of love and tolerance, Jesus was seen as a political threat and was put to death in a barbaric execution. His mother Mary, Mary Magdalene and several other followers stayed with him until the end. Today at St. James we walked outside, listened to readings and followed the path of the cross before erecting it near the road.

Holy Week, part 1 In the days before everyone could read, ritual and ceremony in the church served to both show, and tell, the stories which formed the basis of Christian faith. Maundy Thursday is tomorrow. Many scholars agree the word is derived from the Latin ‘mandatum’, used in the phrase Mandatum novum do vobis ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos" / "A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another." This statement by Jesus in the Gospel of John 13:34 explains to the Apostles the significance of his action of washing their feet. Some churches re-enact this during Maundy Thursday services. Other stories remembered on Thursday are those of the last supper Jesus had with his friends (commemorated in Holy Eucharist) and the long meditation of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane before he was betrayed and handed over to officials. Anglican churches also strip the altar and sanctuary (the front of the church) of all decorative elements. This prepares the scene, as it were, for the solemnity of Good Friday.
