Dr. Gilliard graduated with his Doctor of Chiropractic from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in 2015, receiving Clinic Honours recognizing proficiency during his clinical internships. He also completed his acupuncture certification with McMaster University in 2015 by completing the Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program. Prior to all of this, he completed a Bachelor of Kinesiology, graduating with first-class honours at Brock University in 2011.

Dr. Gilliard strongly believes in the ability to stay active as a key element to functional well-being. Finding and treating the source of a patient’s complaint, rather than a single painful spot, allows him to help patients stay active in whatever capacity they desire. Runners Have Much Healthier Knees Than Scientists Thought

Does running lead to future knee arthritis? Probably not, if you follow this conclusion: "[...] a history of leisure running is not associated with increased odds of prevalent knee pain, ROA, and SOA. In fact, for knee pain, there was a dose-dependent inverse association with running where runners had less knee pain." ROA stands for evidence of osteoarthritis on radiograph (xray). Low Back Pain

A really well done video to help patients better understand low back pain. It hits on a lot of key points I emphasize frequently, including: > Most cases of low back pain are less of a singular event, and more the result of long-term outcomes from many factors. > Understanding that for most low back pain you will not do any additional ‘damage’ by continuing to live an active lifestyle. > Focusing on active therapies — like combining spinal manipulation, massage, and/or acupuncture with exercises and an active lifestyle — will resolve complaints much quicker than choosing one type of treatment and resting until you feel better. > Advanced imaging studies (like MRIs and X-rays) are only needed in specific cases — as this video describes, possibly as few as 5% of cases. http://tinyurl.com/p2q8yry

Understanding how acupuncture needles can produce a therapeutic change is a challenging topic for patients to understand, which means a lot of theories end up being thrown around as possible explanations. Energy flow, muscle relaxation, endorphin release, controlled inflammation… with so many possible paths to benefit, it becomes a lot of information to take in. But what about improved neuromuscular control? This is another possible route to benefit for acupuncture. For example, we’ve known for several years now that patients with chronic low back pain tend to show decreases in the size of the multifidi muscles (deep spinal muscles) — both at rest and during voluntary contraction. But as Dar and Hicks demonstrate in the Journal of Back and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation (vol.29, no.2, pp.273-278, 2016), 10 minutes of needle insertion to low back tender points produces moderate, but consistent, increases in multifidi thickness in the low back. That’s a bigger, stronger contraction produced by muscles that often get lost during long bouts of low back pain. That’s improved neuromuscular control.
