As a church we have a prophetic responsibility. Ours is the duty and task to stand with the downtrodden and marginalized in our society. I would go further to say that we must stand with those who have been discriminated against and to remind the society that discrimination of any kind is wrong. http://www.united-church.ca/blogs/round-table/black-lives-matter-canada-also?utm_source=E-Newsletters&utm_campaign=1dfcb12934-UAJ170221&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_53a49c9e28-1dfcb12934-159517661

Please join us February 22 as we hear the results of a local poverty study, learn a bit about the misconceptions surrounding poverty, and look for a way forward. This event follows the weekly SUPPER'S READY meal. They say it takes a community to raise a child. It takes a community working together to find the light at the end of this tunnel.

Quebec City Mosque vigil planned for Thursday Feb. 2, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Belleville mosque at the corner of West Moira and Coleman streets. Marchers will then make their way to City Hall. Belleville – Belleville’s new Inclusivity Committee is organizing a vigil and march of solidarity this evening with the Muslim community in the wake of the slaying spree in a Quebec City mosque last weekend. The march will take place on Thursday. Organizers are hoping for a strong turnout to show solidarity in the community. Chairman of the meeting, Coun. Garnet Thompson, said the march and its timing would fit Mayor Taso Christopher’s mayor’s fervent wish for such an event to take place this week. Rev. Aruna Alexander stressed it is important to clarify that the march is actually being organized by the Inclusivity Committee, with which Thompson concurred. Imam Mohammed Saleh expressed thanks on behalf of his community and reminded that: “We are all brothers under God. When one part of the body is hurt, the whole body feels it.” He blamed the incident in Quebec on people “who are ignorant and do not know or understand our religion.” Representatives from Quinte United Immigrant Services, also members of the committee, and other citizen representatives such as Bob Clute and Coun. Jack Miller all supported the community project. “The incident at Quebec is in the upper minds of all the people I have talked to,” said Miller. “I am sure this will get a lot of support.”
