******** Update on capturing Skating Photos******* I wanted to provide an update on my earlier post. First off, I want to thank everyone for their support in my earlier decision. It was never my intention to vilify Skate Newfoundland and Labrador. The ladies and gentlemen of Skate NL, who make up the executive and organization, are tremendous people, they put in endless hours to make sure the skating community in Newfoundland and Labrador operates at the highest level. I've recently had a conversation with Skate NL and I support them in their decision to re-instate the $100 fee, after some reflection, I now have a better understanding for the reason behind it. The competitions hosted by the individual clubs each year, which involves Skate NL, have many costs associated with them and without burdening the skaters with any extra costs, any extra money that can be raised is a big help. Having a first hand opportunity to capture the top skating athletes in the province was a great opportunity, and the fee is but a small charge, to access this opportunity. As an amateur photographer I was able to capture some great photos over the past few years. In the past having my daughter involved in the sport, meant the costs of travel and lodging was mine to bear, however since she is no longer involved in the sport I have to assure I recoup these costs in order to attend competitions, just to take the photographs. As with any business it helps to mitigate loses. The easiest way to achieve this is to get some costs covered up front. For me this would mean raising enough money pre-event to cover off my costs for the lodging (when necessary) and the fee. Any money raised pre-event from skaters would apply against future photo orders. I am hopeful during the summer, through discussions with Skate NL, that I might be back capturing photos next year or that some other photographer will get involved. I think action shots, that capture the skaters in their element, is the best way to represent the sport of figure skating. For the skaters that are in their graduating year, I apologize I was not there to capture some of your final moments on the ice. Best of luck to all the skaters at the upcoming Provincials and Atlantic Championships. I hope each of you Skate your best and don't forget to SMILE. 😃

*******Attention Skaters and Families******* I had been contemplating whether or not I would photograph any figure skating this year and had finally decided that I would offer my services. I decided any event that would be in St.John's or Corner Brook, I would do for free as I have always done, however any competition in any other location on the island would require that my hotel costs for the competition be covered. Over the past 5 years I have invested heavily in the equipment to capture the skaters and the quality of my work speaks for itself. I never really did it for the money, because if I did I would have stopped it after the first year. The only reason I ever decided to photograph complete competitions was to make sure that every skater could see their photos online. In my first year of taking photographs my plan was to only take photos of my daughter, however this expanded to the entire day of categories, that included my daughter's category. I was later contacted by a mom looking for photos of her daughter who skated for the last time in that competition, however I had not photographed her skate. I could tell she was disappointed and I made a promise to myself that from that day forward, if I was going to photograph part of a competition, then I was going to do it all. So this brings me to today. I was asked by a parent if I was going to be at the Sectionals this weekend. Before I could reply I noticed I had an email from the Skate NL executive asking the same question, for which I quickly replied yes. I was then notified that a charge of $100 would have to be paid at the completion of the event. This in no means is a huge amount of money to me, however it's where I draw line. I would have only been to happy to give up my Friday (no less Remembrance Day) and Saturday to come photograph the skaters, even if it meant I wouldn't see one sale from it. For years now my family and friends have called me crazy for spending so much time, for so little money, in doing this, but they supported me completely. I got enough joy from the comments and shares, by the many family and friends, of the skaters' photos, as I would paste them on Facebook. I wouldn't lie and say I never made any money, but the reimbursement would never even come close, to rival the amount of time and equipment investment I have made. If this fee applies to all competitions going forward, I'm sorry, but I will be out. However should it not be, any organizing committee that would like me to be part of their competition, please feel free to reach out to me.

I want to extend a thank-you to all the people who participated in the Wish Foundation Fundraiser. It was a great experience photographing your beautiful children for such a great cause and I throughly enjoyed each session. I want to extend a special thank-you to Miss Catherine and Miss Hannah who positioned the dancers and, educated me at the same time, with the many complicated positions involved in this art-form. I definitely have a new respect for what is involved with becoming a dancer. If you have not received a link to your photos please send me an email to robnormanphotography@outlook.com, with your daughters name, and I will get the link forwarded to you so you can download the photos. For those parents that would like them on CD I will get around to doing this for you sometime in September. Thanks again.
