Wait VS Stay: Is there a difference? YES there is - depending on how you train it. We see WAIT as the behaviour you ask your dog to give you before he wants something. It is the equivalent of BE PATEINT. If your dog is patient he gets what he wants. What does being patient look like to you? Maybe it does look like he is not moving - we see it as the dog not going forward towards what he wants. WAIT is always in anticipation of getting something he wants: a treat, his supper, getting to go through a door, being petting by someone, going for a W-A-L-K… STAY means don't move. It may mean your dog’s safety! An example might be, he just darted across the road and you want him to STAY until you get to him, because there is a car coming and it is not safe for him to come back. IF you train stay the same way as WAIT your dog will likely be "antsy" for your arrival and may bolt – since wait is connected to getting things. To train a solid stay, a totally different method of reinforcement is used … UNTIL the stay is solid… If you want more info on training wait AND stay, sign up for our foundations/manners 101 class or a private lesson.

Teach your dog to pull!! That may sound contrary to most "obedience" training. However here in Alberta where we are often blanketed in snow for over six months, it might be desirable to have your dog pull you - on SKIS!! If you would like to find out more about winter pulling activities for you and your dog come to our skijoring clinic!
