Join us at the Human Resource Professionals Association Conference January 20th - January 22nd Happy New Year from our entire team at 2by2 Strategies. We are kicking this year off by showcasing our CompTrak Software at the HRPA Conference at the Metro Convention Centre this Wednesday to Friday. Please drop by booth 134 to learn more about our enterprise wide software solution that enables companies to effectively manage all aspects of their incentive compensation plans. This past year we completed our implementation of CompTrak for Royal Bank of Canada’s Capital Markets platform. At the trade-show you will have an opportunity to spin the CompTrak wheel; however, if you are unable to attend, please spin the wheel virtually while learning more about CompTrak (if you happen to win please email us at info@2by2.ca a screen capture of the screen and we will send you out your prize!) at http://comptrak.ca/SpintoWin/ We are also excited to share the news that our new head office location will be opening on February 1st at 120 Adelaide Street West, Suite 1000. Both Lasse and I look forward to hosting many of you at this site in the coming months. All the best Perry and Lasse

After Action Review | Better Evaluation

Falling Short of Your Goal – What Now? It’s always great to talk about achieving your goals but what should you do when you fall short of them? Corporations and individuals alike should have a framework to debrief and assess what happened. But what makes the framework extremely valuable is not the debrief but the action plan that comes out of that debrief – action is what differentiates excuses from knowledge. Also, retaining the knowledge and applying it to future situations is critical in not repeating mistakes. This past weekend I had the privilege of running the Disney Marathon which was my first marathon since 2002. Given my training and other events I had done over the past six months I felt that running under 4 hours was an attainable goal, in fact I confided in a friend that if things went right, 3:50 was a good possibility. I crossed the finished line on Sunday just over 4 hours and 45 minutes – way off my goal. Over the past two days, I have been working through an After Action Review (AAR) framework on positives, improvement opportunities and key things I would do differently when I run the next marathon. I have posted the framework with some of the findings. (http://betterevaluation.org/evaluation-options/after_action_review) The trick for most companies and people is to actually take the debrief and do things differently. Am I disappointed I didn’t achieve the goal? Absolutely. Was the experience a waste? Not at all. Does the goal remain and is it achievable? Yes with a different approach. It was at mile 19 that I realized I wasn’t go to achieve what I set out to do but that didn’t mean everything was lost. In fact, my biggest learning from 2015 was that when running through Hell, you have to keep running, don’t stop. Goals are not always black and white. We all have setbacks – we are ultimately judged on how we deal with those setbacks and what we do next. Finishing / sustaining / viability should always be a goal no matter what the circumstances. No different for companies. Learn and then take that knowledge and apply it to your second attempt. Great companies will take that knowledge and make it available to other teams and projects who can learn from those insights. I am always amazed by the knowledge of my friends and the unleveraged knowledge corporations have within it. Hope you get value from the framework and we are always keen to work with companies who want to tap into that knowledge.
