The Alberton Museum- formerly the Alberton Court House & Jail was built in 1878. In 1978 this building stopped functioning as the Court House and in 1980 it became the Alberton Museum. Now, the Alberton Museum houses many wonderful exhibits and artifacts. It still inclueds the original judge's bench and jail bars on the basement windows. It also holds a large collection of family geneology. The Alberton Museum became a designated National Historical Site on September 12th, 1986.
Want to find out more about your family heritage? The Alberton Museum's Genealogy Center is the perfect place to visit. With a wide array of information on surnames from A-Z we can help start your family tree, find missing links and help solve family mysteries. We have access to local cemetary records, baptisms, marriages, deaths, archival papers, newspaper articles etc. Our family cards and binders make searching quicker and more efficient. Our largest collection of genealogy is from the West Prince area, while a private collection compiled by Jean Meggison covers all island families. Our collection also includes an extensive photograph collection, and most photos can be purchased at a cost of $10-$15. We can also provide information on community history as well. Admission for genealogical services is by donation.
Our Genealogy center also has books for sale, ranging from family and community histories to books about Alberton and PEI.
