Today is election day in Iran. For several reasons, I won't write much on this subject. But there is something I would like to mention. Two years ago I wrote my master thesis on the depiction of Iran in US media. In it, a critical analysis of words and images used in articles to describe Iran and, most importantly, its people. The reason I share this is because, when I got to work today, I was proud to see our paper devote an article to the subject of Iranian elections. A rare occurrence in Belgian media (you can check all other papers). The danger, however, is that some of my colleagues themselves would be easily convinced of the images on the left representing Iranians in their own country. I really don't blame them. It's what they've been fed by most media for decades. So they add these pictures on the left as they come in from different news agencies. As soon as I arrived I changed the images to those pictured in the two columns on the right. Why? People with my heritage are...
