10 top tips: preparing for the NDIS

The NDIS is currently rolling across NSW and the advice we have received from the roll out area is to start getting ready now. Scroll down to learn the top ten tips from “Every Australia Counts” that will help you prepare for the NDIS. 1. Start today out Your first NDIS planning meeting could be a pivotal moment in your life and it might be only months away. It’s time to start thinking about how you want to live your life and what you need to achieve your goals. 2. Think big The NDIS will transform disability services and it’s for life. It’s time to stop worrying about barriers you might have run into in the past and start thinking about the big picture. What do you want to achieve in your life and how do you want to live it? It might take some time get used to the idea that the NDIS could actually change your world. It helps to talk through your goals, aspirations and dreams with people that know you well. 3. Write a list or keep a diary It’s also important to think about your day-to-day reality. What are the barriers you encounter every day that make life harder than it could be? A good way to monitor this is to start documenting them now. You could write a diary, take photos or keep a list. This will provide concrete examples you can use in your first planning meeting to help you get the most out of your NDIS plan. 4. Be specific There’s no doubt that the NDIS could be truly transformative – but it’s up to you to make sure you take advantage of it. Try to be as specific as you can about what you need and what you want, what your goals are and how you want to live. Write all of these down and take them along to your first meeting. 5. Learn the language There’s a whole world of NDIS jargon out there and it’s a good idea to start getting your head around terms like funded supports, planners, centre-based service and support plan. This will help you to better understand the resources that are available and navigate the process. Check out the Every Australian Counts NDIS Dejargonater and for a full list see NDP’s glossary. 6. Research, research, research There’s a reason that the NDIS was rolled out in trial sites first, and that’s so that we can all learn from the experience of others. Try to get as much information in advance – this way you’ll be better prepared to deal with any challenges and also to take full advantage of the opportunities of the NDIS. The Every Australian Counts website is a great place to start. 7. Get the paperwork done early It’s a good idea to fill in your planning workbook well before you go in for your first meeting. It contains important questions about your life and your future and you don’t want to have to come up with an answer on the spot! Contact us today on 0424 497 022 for a free copy of your NDIS Planning Workbook and Carer Checklist. 8. Don’t sweat the detail Have you previously felt pressure to list your needs in a priority order or compare the cost of one service or equipment over another? The NDIS changes all of that because it guarantees you all the reasonable and necessary supports that you need to help reach your goals in life. It’s time to stop worrying about the detail and start re-imagining your future. 9. Get all your documents ready Before your first meeting get all the documentation you have together so you can streamline the process with your planner. This will help you to explain who you are and what you need. Try to collate all your medical, education and health documents to have it ready. 10. Take someone with you You don’t have to go this process alone. Take along to your meeting people who know you well. That might be family, friends, support workers or advocates. They’ll help you to make sure you aren’t forgetting anything important and can assist with explaining your situation to your planner. If you would like to speak to one of our qualified staff about preparing for your planning meeting please Contact us today on 0424 497 022 for a free copy of your NDIS Planning Workbook and Carer Check-list. Dealing with Grief & Loss Most people eventually recover from the loss of a loved one. However, protracted grief over a period of years can be complicated by clinical depression. In some clients it is the failure to grieve which is at the root of the individual's low mood and going through the stages of grieving can be of great help in coming to terms with the loss. During C&C Counselling sessions we will progress you through various stages to explore your grief responses and any psychological barriers to healing. In the first session you may be given psychological tests to measure the symptoms of your anxiety, depression, attitudes, and core beliefs. Within the first few sessions we gain an understanding your background, history and presenting problems. A problem list is collaboratively drawn up to target those areas that you wants to change as a result of the therapy. An individualized program is collaboratively drawn up with you and this then forms the blueprint for treatment using either strengthened based Solution Focused Brief (SFB T) therapy and CBT counselling. These stages may be explored in our sessions ~ 1. Coming to terms with the reality of the loss. 2. Working with the emotional pain, anger, guilt and suffering attributed to the loss. 3. A readjustment of life without the significant person, in the present tense. 4. Taking the emotional investment that you had placed in their significant 'other' and rebuilding connections and relationships with others. 5. Building 'living memories' which recognises the quality, importance and irreplaceable impact of the person in your loss, and building awareness of the impact and meaning this has for the person now. 6. Spiritual Implications. All sessions are confidential and you will be treated with respect. When you contact C & C Wellness, our staff will speak with you to discuss your needs, to answer your questions and to assist you with making an appointment.

Couples generally come to couples counselling when they realise that their relationship is in some kind of trouble. Some times the problem is so significant, or has been left unattended for so long, that the relationship is already in severe crisis. At other times, the couple becomes aware at an earlier stage that they are not able to resolve their problems on their own, and that they need the help of a relationship counsellor before their relationship hits crisis point and heads to dissolution. No relationship is ever entirely smooth sailing. Sometimes the problems are overtly present form the beginning of the relationship, sometimes they surface after a long time of being together, or as a result of unexpected stresses. Whatever trouble your relationship is in, and no matter how severely your relationship is being affected, almost all couples can benefit from couples or relationship counselling at some time in their relationship.

What causes depression? There is no one cause for depression. In some individuals, stressful life events such as the loss of a job, long-term unemployment, physical health issues, family problems, the death of a loved one, or the loss of a close relationship might trigger depression. For other people, there is no obvious cause. Some factors that might place a person at a higher risk of developing depression include: Family history: Having a close relative with depression can increase a person’s chances of developing the condition. This doesn’t mean that depression is inevitable – other factors increase or decrease a person’s risk. Social factors: Some people who experience neglect or abuse during childhood might be more likely to develop depression as adults. Personal psychological factors: People who tend to dwell on negative events, worry excessively, or attend more to negative information about themselves, the world or the future are more prone to depression. Neurochemistry: Changes in the levels or activity of certain chemicals in the brain like serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine play a role in depression, though the specific processes are not fully understood. Evidence-based psychological interventions There are many effective psychological treatments for depression. Certain specialised forms of psychological intervention tend to be more effective than general supportive counselling, as they address current issues and symptoms and also aim to reduce the likelihood of having future episodes of depression. Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) focuses on unhelpful thoughts about the self, others, and the future which may contribute to depression. The goal of this type of therapy is to identify, examine, and modify these unhelpful thoughts and the behaviours that follow, and increase behaviours that might improve mood and quality of life. This includes ensuring a balance of enjoyable activities throughout each day, and a range of activities that give the individual a sense of achievement, Problem-solving, to help address possible causes of stress and lowered mood, is also an important component. Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) involves addressing problems in the person’s relationships and expectations about others that might be contributing to the symptoms of depression. The aims of this type of therapy include helping the individual to find new ways to develop and nurture relationships, resolve conflicts with others, express emotions and communicate more effectively, adapt to life-role changes, and improve social support networks. Short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (STPP) can help the person to become more aware and reflective of their own feelings, desires, motivations and thoughts. The goals of this therapy are to identify and change unhelpful defences which may be getting in the way of a healthy life, decrease vulnerability to depression, and build resilience. Our Counsellors at C&C Wellness will work with you and assist you in understanding the factors that might be contributing to your difficulties. A treatment plan is then developed. We may use a range of modalities and psychological strategies such as mindfulness and relaxation to help you in your recovery.
