I'm sure we are all loving the wet weather at the moment, but unfortunately the rain can bring with it some unwanted health issues for our four legged friends! One of the most common issues vets see after rain is hoof abscesses. Whether you have seen it before, or have been lucky enough to never have a horse with one, the attached information might be educational for you. NB. The second picture is illustrating what is referred to as the "lamellae" which are fingerlike projections which interdigitate between the hoof and pedal bone to hold everything together. Abscesses can track up the white line and cause separation of these sensitive structures.

We would like to let everyone know that our vet SARAH WILL BE ON HOLIDAYS FROM DECEMBER 23RD TO JANUARY 15TH INCLUSIVE. During this time we will only be able to book appointments for Monday 16th onwards. All emergencies will need to be directed to other equine veterinarians including Townsville Veterinary Clinic who offer 24 hour emergency support. If you have a horse that needs any vaccinations due during this time please feel free to give us a call, we can fit you in earlier to ensure you horse is protected during this period. What a day today scoping horses to check for stomach ulcers! Thanks to Randlab for supplying the scope 👍 fortunately a lot of horses did not have ulcers but for those who did treatment can begin. We will be holding another scoping day early next year- follow our page to stay up to date!!

Are you worried your horse could have stomach ulcers? Is he/she displaying any of the symptoms which can be associated with ulcers such as altered behaviour, lack of appetite, weight loss or even mild colic? Below is a picture of a healthy stomach on the left and severe stomach ulcers on the right. Ulcers can vary in severity. Garrards Equine Vet in conjunction with Randlab will be offering free gastroscoping (inserting a camera into the stomach) in December in the Townsville region. Gastroscoping in the only way to know for sure if your horse does/doesn't have ulcers! This procedure requires horses to be current in their Hendra vaccination status, and also requires a small amount of planning and preparation.
