This magnificent wall work is a new addition to the MCA Collection. ‘Manbuynga’ is a sculptural mural based on Barayuwa Munungurr’s paintings of his mother’s clan salt-water Country, Yarrinya, in north-eastern Arnhem Land. In ‘Manbuynga’, Barawuya has taken a section of one of his barks and expanded it to create this major wall work, incorporating painted sculptural forms which break out from the surface to suggest the currents surging through water and over rocks and reef, and the form of the whale’s tail as it swam through the monsoonal waters. It’s on display in ‘MCA Collection: Today Tomorrow Yesterday’ and you can find out more at the MCA Collection online >> http://bit.ly/2hKzZ8I #TodayTomorrowYesterday #MCAnow

Ever seen Jack Nicholson in the 1980 film ‘The Shining’? Gareth Sansom’s bold painting references that famous moment when Nicholson’s face peers between the cracks of a bathroom door: “Heeere’s Johnny!”. The stripes in the painting also pay homage to the vibrant colours of Op Art. Sansom’s work is on display in ‘MCA Collection: Today Tomorrow Yesterday’. Want to know more?
