ALL CLEAN Doctors and nurses at Ryde Hospital are making sure their hands are clean with hand hygiene compliance rates well over 85 per cent. Specially trained nursing staff observed the hand cleaning behaviour of our staff members who entered the patient zone and found that at Ryde we are doing way better than the current national benchmark of 75 per cent. Within the hospital our surgical and orthopaedic Ward 3 (staff pictured) had the best results with doctors’ hand hygiene compliance at 93 per cent and the nursing staff compliance at 91 per cent. This is a great result, especially in the lead-up to World Hand Hygiene Day on May 5.

RYDE RECEIVES SOME EASTER TREATS: The staff at Ryde Hospital received some Humpty Dumpty eggs from one of the North Shore Mums Smiles2U team to handout over the Easter long weekend. A visit to the ED is never fun but this donation means at least patients attending the ED over Easter won’t have to miss out on the traditional chocolate egg. No doubt the special Easter delivery will be appreciated by all ED patients and visitors, especially the juniors. Thank you Smiles2u for bringing Easter cheer to our hospital.

7 News Sydney

Our mental health team at the ‘Check-up from your neck-up’ stall at the Sydney Royal Easter Show are doing a fantastic job. Tom Sacre from 7 News Sydney talked to our staff in his report about award winning rats and mental health at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and said that “one of the biggest issues in NSW is self-reporting mental health issues. It might only be something small but the best thing to do is open up and talk about it.”

We all know of someone who has been injured as a result of a fall. It might even have been you! For many people the resulting injury is so significant it requires a visit to hospital. Suddenly, from that one ‘little accident’ the health consequences can become ‘big’. At NSLHD we take falls, and preventing them very seriously. That’s why yesterday Ryde Hospital marked ‘April Falls Day’ by sharing information with staff, patients and visitors to the hospital on simple strategies to prevent falls.

WARD 2 HANDOVER: Yesterday we had the hand over of the new Ward 2 with Capital Works and key members of the hospital. It's complete and just waiting on those final finishing touches before it receives its first patient in a few weeks time. We were excited to get a tour with Howard (the Nursing Unit Manager), Brian and Matthew who pointed out all the little details that make the new ward so special. We're looking forward to the official opening later this year.
