Alan Turing - Wikipedia

People almost never ask me who invented the computer. When they do I tell them it's a difficult question. The short answer is "Alan Turing". This man invented the machine in World War II that the allies used to crack the German Enigma code. It's an ancestor to all our modern computers including your smartphone. I said the question is a difficult one because even the humble abacus can be considered a computer. Before Turing's computer the term "computer" was used as a job description for someone who did computations. Turing is a little-known hero, because his work was top secret. It has been estimated that his work shortened the war in Europe by more than two years and saved over fourteen million lives. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Turing

There are a few phone scams going around claiming to be such entities as Centrelink, Telstra, Microsoft, Norton and McAfee. Just hang up. If you're not tough enough to hand up then tell them to ring me on (03) 5033 2360 because I am your Computer guy. Just DON'T do what they tell you to. Everyone that I have spoken to that has been scammed has talked about how realistic they sound.

Some websites are meant to suck you into a scam. If you come across a website that is telling you to ring a phone number because your computer is full of viruses. It just ain't so. Some websites will stop you from closing your browser and start setting off alarms. You can use the Ctrl + Alt + Del method to close the browser but it may return to the same website next time you open it. The trick then is to tap escape constantly while the browser is opening to stop it going anywhere. Then you can type in a new address and you're right again. If in doubt, take your computer to a computer guy that you can have face to face contact with.
