The Classics by the Coast Committee are very pleased to announce that we have confirmed our Beneficiary for the upcoming Classics by the Coast 2017. We will be supporting a program run by the Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC)here in CQ, called “Braking the Cycle”. About PCYC Rockhampton Unleashing kids’ potential starts here at PCYC Rockhampton. PCYC Rockhampton first opened in 1970 in the Tivoli Theatre on the south-side of the Fitzroy River. In 1977 a new building was built on the present site at Stapleton Park, North Rockhampton. Some 25 years later in 2002 the building received its first major addition – the Pulse Centre for young people and later a new skate park was built adjacent to the building. The present building is disability friendly with a lift at the front entrance of the building and houses an indoor basketball court, a performing area with a stage and DJ box, a large multi-use room, a small conference room and School Age Care rooms with fenced play areas and a bicycle safety track at the front of the building. We are self-funded and do not receive any government funding to support our club. We offer a wide range of activities including pool tables, badminton, baton twirling, bike education, judo, ju-jitsu, karate, play development, trampoline and boxing. This is achieved via a volunteer driver mentor program designed to support learner drivers without access to a supervisor or registered vehicle to complete their logbook hours. The program was developed by PCYC Ipswich and PCYC Logan in response to a need identified by the community. Ipswich and Logan feature highly in regional unemployment statistics and following a meeting between community leaders, state and federal government and community organisations, it was identified that many people are willing to work however lack the simple ability to get to and from the workplace. Further analysis identified that this was most evident in young people aged 16 to 25 years who did not have the capacity to complete the mandatory 100 hours of supervised driving experience necessary to gaining a licence. The 100 hour requirement has placed enormous stress on young people and acts as a significant barrier to getting a licence and engage in employment. Secondary to this, is the impact of poorly educated or unlicenced drivers on the roads and the devastating impact this can have on a community. “Braking the Cycle” has been termed to highlight the links between obtaining a licence, employment and good social outcomes. In other words the program aims to not only empower young people to get their licence, but also to break the cycle of welfare, unemployment, and anti-social behaviour.” The ACMC’s aim is to secure enough funds to purchase a Vehicle for the PCYC in Rockhampton, as the Rockhampton regional group currently lease a car & it is a constant struggle to make the lease payments. The Committee are very excited to take up this challenge. I hope you also, will see the value in this initiative & help the ACMC make Classics by the Coast 2017 our most successful yet!
