Have you heard of Photodynamic Therapy ? Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has many applications and can be used to treat a number of conditions, including: CANCERS (superficial basal cell cancers) PDT is a nonsurgical, superficial skin cancer treatment,( no cutting needed) where ALA/MLA is applied to the area of the cancer and covered for 3 hours, followed by exposure to a red light to treat the area. needs two treatments, 2 weeks apart are required. ACNE PDT is one of the methods used to treat acne. First, ALA creams are applied to the skin. 3 hours later, red light is then used to activate the treatment area. Following this, three treatments, 1 month apart are required. ACTINIC CHEILITIS ( sun damaged Lips) Photodynamic therapy is a useful treatment for sun damaged lips. ALA cream is applied to the skin and 3 hours later activated by relight treatment. Swelling, redness and peeling of the lip, typically lasts up to a week and repeat treatment may be required 12 weeks later, depending on the response. SUN SPOTS PDT is an excellent treatment for solar keratosis of the face. First, ALA/MLA cream is applied to the affected area. 3 hours later, red light is then used to activate the cream. Inflammation of the sunspots can occur and will usually resolve in a week’s time. (Daylight activation of the cream has been done before and has proven to be successful. Please speak to one of our doctors for more information.)

Non Melanoma Skin cancer (Basal cell cancers and Squamous Cell cancers) and Vitamin B3 VITAMIN B3 AND SKIN CANCER Nicotinamide, Vitamin B3 (not nicotinic acid) has been shown to be an effective way of treating solar keratoses (“sun spots”). There is also evidence that vitamin B3 can prevent common skin cancers. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight increases the risk of skin cancer by damaging the DNA in skin cells, and suppressing the immune system’s anti-cancer response. Vitamin B3 protects against this immune system suppression. It does not prevent damage to the skin cells caused by UV radiation, so it’s still very important to stay sun smart and avoid excessive exposure to sunlight The effective dose of vitamin B3 is 500mg. It’s important to take the correct form of vitamin B3. Make sure the tablets are nicotinamide or niacinamide and not nicotinic acid/niacin, which may cause side effects. The correct form of vitamin B3 comes as 500mg tablets. Take one per day. How effective is vitamin B3 for treating solar keratoses or preventing skin cancer? Early research has shown that vitamin B3 (nicotinamide) 500-1000mg per day, taken orally, was effective in a group of patients with significantly sun damaged skin. The observed effects were: In a double-blind study of over 380 patients (average age 66) with at least two non-melanoma skin cancers in the last 5 years, the rates of new non-melanoma skin cancer diagnoses were 23% lower in the nicotinamide group (500mg bd) compared to the placebo group. The appearance of actinic keratoses were reduced in the supplement group as well by 11% at 3 months of treatment and by 20% at nine months. Vitamin B3 is not a cure for solar keratoses. People with solar keratoses should use one of the other treatments such as a prescription cream or cryotherapy (freezing) in conjunction with vitamin B3 for the best results. Vitamin B3 does not protect against sunburn. It is not a substitute for sunscreen and other protective measures to reduce UV exposure. But for people who have numerous non melanoma skin cancers, it is another option Available. Please discuss with your doctor for further info. Side effects Side effects from nicotinamide are uncommon at the recommended dosage of 500mg per day. Some people experience an upset stomach, nausea or diarrhoea. Vitamin B3 taken as nicotinic acid commonly causes unpleasant hot flushes.
Thank you all for the wishes.
