.... it is the season of parties and get togethers ... and for plumbers this invariably means someone corning me with the ... doctors/ plumbers analogy ... they allude to how much we earn ..... I rudely suggest that the only similarity is that we both wear overalls .. and bury our mistakes ?? ... Sooner or later the chat comes around to how dreadful the last plumber that the builder used or worked on their renovation ... and everyone in the group nods enthusiasticly ... not me ..... and then they ask .... 'how do you fix .... '? my usual response is ....I will answer like a lawyer ... $ per minute The above comments sadden me a little as most plumbers that I encounter and deal with are skillful trained technician and accredited , honest great guys ... and not the stereotype that seems to have been around for ever . Interestingly, the frustrations of plumbing clients tend to fall into in 5 areas ... 1. low water pressure 2. water hammer and accoustic harmonics (noise) 3. hot water volume temperature and pressure 4. water quality 5. blockages In this series of 5 articules, I hope to shed some light on perennial plumbing frustrations, in a hope that a little understanding of the unlying issues will lead to permanent solution I am a maintenance plumber, plumbers in my segment of the industry respond to system failures and peoples frustrations ... and how to problem solve plumbing system issues. ... other plumbers are construction plumbers, commerical, mechanical services and civil, who specialise in building and construction .... we all do the same apprenticeship .... and then specialise via experience and courses. Plumbers work with the principles of physics (heat, gravity, friction ) chemistry, engineering to name a few. Today I would like to discuss water pressure as a first topic Tony's Law #1 ' Gravity in drains is good ... and evil in water' ? Q. If you had a drinking straw 700km long and pumped water through it ... what would be the result at the other end ? A. not very much ( if anything) .... on day 8 .. the brilliant CY O'Connor, design engineer of the Kalgoolrie pipeline might have given us and interesting observations of the properties of gravity and resistance .... alas WA lost our most brilliant son amidst the slow arrival of the water in Kal. ... In CY's absence ... I can offer my 37 year career's worth of experience and observations and remedies .... ( and in not way a substitute for Mr. O'Connor's awesomeness .... )
