Carmen was left with horrific burns to 90 per cent of her body when she was hit by a motorbike. She was heavily pregnant at the time. "I found myself on the ground covered in fire," she says. At the hospital, the doctor's news was grim. Every time Carmen's mum visited, she was told it was her daughter's last day. But Carmen was determined to survive for her unborn baby. News of her tragedy spread throughout her community in the Dominican Republic and reached the ears of Child Survival Program staff. “Carmen was so lovely and kind,” staff said. “She was all burned, with her left arm stuck to her neck, and was nine months' pregnant. She really needed help.” Her baby girl, Karla, was born by C-section in a serious condition because of Carmen's injuries. But God was with them. Their quick recovery shocked the doctors. “I thank God that today I have my daughter and also my arm, even though I can’t use it.” Today, Karla is healthy and almost walking at 11 months old. “I love everything about the CSP," says Carmen. "It is not only the economic support but also the companionship [that I love]. Sometimes I get sad, but I give thanks to the Lord because if I had not had that accident, I wouldn’t have a family as the CSP family is for me.”

The Invisibility of Poverty
Poverty makes us believe that we are not worthy to be seen. But behind every set of eyes is a person created in the image of our loving God.
