The Contemporary Vocal course is an intensive 4 year long vocal performance degree studied at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in Perth, Western Australia.

It is a repertoire based performance degree that offers weekly ensemble sessions (with bands), vocal workshops, vocal repertoire classes, one on one lessons, performance skills classes, choir and gospel choir. As well as the core music units of theory, aural and history, there are many performance assessment points throughout semester and the singers will find themselves singing in one capacity or another every single day they are at WAAPA.

The Contemporary Voice department at WAAPA is one of the fastest growing departments, boasting well over 60 vocalists across all four year groups. The vocalists are given many performance opportunities including; WAAPA In The Park, Radioactive at All Saints College, Radioactive Albany at the Albany Entertainment Centre and Radioactive Perth held at WAAPA, plus many more.

The Contemporary Voice department is staffed by some of Australia's finest vocal specialists including Matt Allen, Victoria Newton, Carrie Pereira, Allira Wilson and Melody Itzstein.

The Contemporary vocalists have been privileged to be working with international gospel vocal sensation Melonie Daniels-Walker this past week from New York! Aside from being an absolute monster singer, she is also one of the world's most in-demand background vocalists for artists like Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston. We are beyond lucky to be spending this time with her here at WAAPA this week!

After an incredible 2016, all of the Contemporary Vocalists completed their final Panel Assessment Exams today (and just quietly, they all smashed it out of the ball park ⚾️)! Congratulations to every single one of our students from across all the year groups 🎉🎤 We have some very exciting news happening in early December, so keep your eyes 👀 on this page. There's still time to apply to audition for 2017 enrolment if you are thinking it's too late! Auditions are coming up very soon!

Staff Profile! Introducing the effervescent Victoria Newton! This outstanding vocalist has been serenading audiences for many years here in Perth and also in the UK where she was recognised as one of the most exciting and dynamic singers on the London Jazz scene. Victoria's training in both jazz and classical music has enabled her to become a highly versatile singer who performs across jazz, contemporary and world music genres. Having performed at many major jazz venues and festivals in both London and Perth, she has also has a huge passion for Brazilian music and has performed with many Latin and original Brazilian Jazz bands over the years. Victoria also experienced international success during the mid 1990s with UK dance/pop outfit, 'Strike' and their massive hit 'U Sure Do'. The success of this single and a further 4 top 40 hits took the group to many countries throughout the world, where they performed to audiences of 70,000, appearing alongside artists such as Jocelyn Brown, Tina Arena, The Back Street Boys and even The Spice Girls!! Strike also make many radio and TV appearances which included live performances on MTV and the BBC's 'Top of the Pops' amongst many others! They also released the critically acclaimed album 'I Saw the Future' in 1997. After several years of touring, Victoria returned to her first love of performing #jazz and #latin music, and recorded her first solo jazz album 'The Song is You' in 2004. Around the same time she started teaching on the jazz BMUS course at the prestigious Trinity College of Music in London. She also lectured on the Contemporary Diploma and BMUS vocal courses at Vocal Tech in West London. “A fabulous strong clear voice with a great sense of time and an even greater sense of fun!’ – Steve Rubie, 606 Club, London “Deeply into the music, a real jazz singer” – Jazz UK Victoria currently teaches into the top end of our Bachelor of Music in Principal Study, Ensemble and lectures throughout all year groups in Performance Skills. Staff Profile again! Introducing Allira Wilson: Allira Wilson is one of Australia’s most exciting young talents, whose musical approach has been described as ‘brave and raw as it is supple and intricate’. Her music combines jazz harmony with a contemporary edge and a soulful dynamic. Endowed with a powerful voice, her innovative twists and youthful approach revitalize not only the music, but creates a distinctive and fresh sound. Allira Wilson is a graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and was the winner of the Melville Toyota Scholorship for 2010. Allira was offered a scholarship to attend the prestigious New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City in 2012. She has performed regularly with her own projects as well as Jamie Oehlers’ Blowfish, Mace Francis Orchestra, Alice Humphries Ecila and the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO). She represented WAAPA and toured China in 2010 as well as performing at 2010’s Wangarrata Jazz Festival in Victoria. Allira moved to Melbourne in 2013. She is a member of Gian Slater’s vocal ensemble, Invenio, who toured the East Coast in 2014 with their album, ' Clarion / Whisper'. Invenio performed Slater's new work 'Luminesce' in early 2016 for the annual White Night Festival in Melbourne. A unique collaboration with video artist Robert Jarvis that uses voices as triggers for lighting events. Allira is the winner of the Best Australian Jazz Vocal Album for 'Rise and Fall' at the Bell Awards in 2014, which features Sam Anning, Ben Vanderwal, Tal Cohen and Jamie Oehlers. Allira has been featured on composer Alice Humphries’ Album ECILA and Rick Websters, the Rick Webster Project. She is currently working on her new album, recording later this year with her group Wilson's Racket. She currently teaches at WAAPA in the Contemporary department lecturing in Principal Study, Ensembles and Repertoire Classes. She also teaches Principal Study in Jazz at WAAPA. Staff Profile time! Introducing Carrie Pereira! Carrie Pereira is one of WA's finest, most sought after professional vocalists. Her smooth, soulful, sensitivity combines with her powerhouse delivery to captivate audiences throughout Perth’s vibrant and diverse music scene. She sings with various bands around town and is a vital part of the emerging neo-soul original band Ladywood. Carrie is also one of Perth's best session singers, in demand for backing vocal sessions in the studio and on stage for artists like Christine Anu. Carrie has been teaching singing for over 12 years in various capacities, and has been lecturing in Contemporary Voice at WAAPA for the past 4 years. Her knowledge, expertise and ability to deliver content rich information makes her a huge asset to our department. Carrie currently lectures in Principal Study, Ensemble, Vocal Workshop, Repertoire Class and Contemporary Choir.
