Djelk Rangers
Description
Djelk Rangers are an Indigenous Ranger group based in Maningrida, NT. They manage the cultural & natural resources within the Djelk IPA Established circa 1995, the Djelk Rangers of Maningrida in Arnhem Land represent over 102 clans and 12 language groups. The Djelk Indigenous Protected Area was created in 2009 to manage and monitor the Djelk IPA on behalf of the Traditional Owners. The Djelk Rangers are also exploring the potential for a Marine Protected Area.
Managing over 14,000 km² of land and sea, the Djelk Rangers have 30 male and female land and sea rangers on salaried employment. Management activities include surveillance and monitoring of commercial and illegal fishing activities, management of marine debris and weeds, marine turtle monitoring, fire and weed management, water monitoring and cultural heritage management.

Senior Ranger, Greg Wilson recently attended the Australian Archaeological Association Conference in Sydney NSW. Greg attended the conference with Bethune Carmichael of ANU and gave a presentation on Cultural Heritage Management in the Djelk IPA. Well done Greg!
