Kosciuszko2Coast
Description
K2C works with Partners to bring people together to protect, conserve and reconnect valuable landscapes in the Kosciuszko to Coast region. K2C – Kosciuszko to Coast - is a partnership of 13 natural resource management groups and agencies, both government and non-government, who have come together to work with landholders to conserve and recover our grasslands, woodlands, riparian and wetland areas, small bush birds, arboreal mammals and our treasured forest communities and species.
The K2C partners are committed to building the resilience, extent and connectedness of natural vegetation in our region. The K2C region extends from the Kosciuszko high country eastwards to the NSW South Coast. It includes the ACT and all areas of the Southern Tablelands south of the borders of the Lachlan and Hawkesbury-Nepean Catchments, extending to the NSW-Victorian border. The K2C region includes the upper catchments of the Snowy, Murrumbidgee and Shoalhaven Rivers as well as a number of other coastal rivers such as the Deua, Tuross, Moruya and Bega.
The K2C partners offer landholders in our region assistance in building a connected landscape, offering a range of management options that may include management advice, conservation instruments, such as agreements and incentives, and, when available, funding. The K2C partnership complements existing catchment management goals, recovery plans and Priority Action Statement (PAS2) actions.
The K2C partners are:
■ Bush Heritage Australia
■ Office of Environment and Heritage NSW
■ Greening Australia Capital Region
■ Molonglo Catchment Group
■ South East Local Land Services
■ Nature Conservation Trust NSW
■ ACT Government Environment and Sustainable Development Directorate
■ Upper Murrumbidgee Landcare Committee
■ Friends of Grasslands
■ Upper Shoalhaven Landcare Council
■ Upper Murrumbidgee Catchment Coordinating Committee
■ National Parks Association of NSW
■ National Parks Association of ACT
K2C has a number of Associate Members, including a number of landholders and other groups such as Canberra Ornithologists Group (and give other examples).
K2C is a regional partner in the Great Eastern Ranges initiative - GER. The vision of GER is “People working together to link and protect healthy habitats from western Victoria through NSW and ACT to far north Queensland”. GER was initiated with the formation of K2C some 7 years ago, and has now grown to be a state-wide partnership of similar regional landscape partnerships to cover much of eastern NSW.
The main goals of GER are to:
■ Connect landscapes and ecosystems
■ Link people and landscapes
■ Communicate effectively – and to
■ Apply knowledge
Background
Over the past 200 years, the distribution of native grasslands and woodlands throughout the region has contracted considerably resulting in the fragmentation of vegetation and a subsequent loss in habitat for many native animals. As a consequence the landscape is under considerable stress with its long term agricultural and environmental production capacity being severely reduced. Climate change predictions will increase the future challenges for all land managers.
