Mackay State High School opened on 1st January 1912 in what is now part of the TAFE complex. It was one of the first state high schools opened in Queensland and recognized the growth that was taking place in Mackay and the Pioneer Valley. The school moved Since that time, it has continued to develop with the town, establishing a positive and rich reputation. Over the past 95 odd years many students have graduated to become leaders within the Mackay District and broader community. In the modern booming Mackay economy Mackay SHS is continuing to educate all students in the district and enhancing the school's tradition of academic, cultural and sporting excellence. Mackay State High School's mission is to provide the foundation for successful citizenship through quality teaching and learning.

Through its structures, procedures and curriculum, the school seeks to provide an educational environment in harmony with the needs and interests of all members of the school community.
  

Mackay State High School has currently about 980 students in attendance. We have long established traditions and are the oldest High School in Mackay providing a great place to learn. Our school motto is ‘Labor Vincit' which means ‘Work Conquers.’

We take pride in our long tradition and many accomplishments with a quality curriculum which caters for a wide range of student needs.

GIRLS RUGBY LEAGUE Well done to both our Year 9/10 and Open Girls Rugby League sides who competed in the Karen Murphy Cup yesterday afternoon. Our Year 9/10 girls were knocked out of the competition by Mercy College while our Opens (Pictured below) were beaten in the Grand Final by St. Patrick’s College. RUGBY LEAGUE ACADEMY We were lucky enough to have Michael Hancock and David Stagg, two former Brisbane Broncos Legends, talk to our Rugby League students about their choices on and off the field as they make their way through life. Both spoke about how to handle challenges that both Rugby League and life throw at you and ways to overcome these obstacles. RUGBY LEAGUE ‘Congratulations to Rugby League Academy students Jacob Osborne, Jake Kearton & Henri Stocks who recently represented Capricornia at the 15 Years Rugby League State Titles. The boys performed extremely well, representing their school tremendously. All boys scored tries throughout the carnival with Jake and Jacob being awarded Man of the Match for 2 of the games. The boys were joined by Mackay SHS Rugby League Coordinator Andrew Gercken who was the Assistant Coach of the side. Congratulations boys!’

The Shell Questacon Science Circus is coming to Mackay on Saturday 10th June 11am -4pm at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre. The Shell Questacon Science Circus is a great opportunity for parents and children to share, discover and explore science together. Come along and spin like an ice-skater, discover how fast you can throw a ball, freeze your shadow on a wall and test your reflexes. Tickets are available at the door on the day. JUNIOR SECONDARY LEADERSHIP CEREMONY Thursday morning 17 students were inducted as Junior Secondary Leaders for 2017. A special parade was held with the family's and all of the Year 7, 8 and 9 cohort, where the Junior Secondary Leaders were presented with their badges by School Captains Haard Shah and Thrisha Bajamundi.
