Lilies and cats With Christmas upon us, many will receive bunches of flowers as loving gifts. Unfortunately many of us are unaware of the toxic affects some flowers can have on our pets. Specifically, cats are drawn to Lilies and can easily access them on a table or bench and of course in the garden. It's not all Lilies that are toxic to cats but members of the Lilium Hermerocallis genera are the most toxic. These include Easter lilies, Christmas Lilies, Tiger lilies and Day lilies. All parts of the lily are poisonous. Dogs who eat them will probably only get a stomach ache. Cats though can suffer acute kidney failure and even death. Symptoms include: lethargy, depression and vomiting, acute kidney and renal failure. Onset of symptoms occurs within about 2 hours. Acute kidney failure will develop within 24 - 72 hrs. If symptoms are left untreated a cat can die within 3-7 days. If you suspect your pet has eaten any part of a Lily and exhibiting any symptoms seek veterinary advice immediately.
