About us - Services A – Z - Women and Newborn Health Service

If you are needing some extra support with your breastfeeding journey I can not recommend the Breastfeeding Centre at King Edward Memorial Hospital highly enough!! When my son was born we were having trouble getting him to gain weight, he looked like he was latched correctly and was in the correct position. He would feed for a long time on both sides. Everything looked great except for his weight, he was losing more and more. I made an appointment to go into the Breastfeeding Centre at KEMH. This was the best thing I could have ever done! It turns out Nate was "tricking" us. In a 10min period he had taken less than 25ml from both sides (5mins each side). Apparently he wasn't as efficient as we had thought! We ended up doing EBM top ups as the lactation consultant recommended, and so my lactation cookie journey started! I was always so paranoid about having enough EBM to offer Nate as a top up. In the end we managed to get him thriving! And we went back to exclusively Breastfeeding. Nate and I had our struggles with Breastfeeding! A lot of mums and bubs do! I worried about my supply a lot. Nate would refuse the breast and only want the bottle, then refuse the bottle and only want the breast! In the end i made the very hard decision to switch to formula because of the toll it was all taking on my mental health. I am so grateful to have managed to feed Nathaniel for as long as I did, if it wasn't for the Breastfeeding Centre I would have given up before 6 weeks, instead of making it to 4 or 5 months! Through my journey I discovered a gap in the market for lactation cookies, so I decided to start making my own! Not only are they delicious but they are so much more affordable than others available! I also understand that quiet often you want them now! And don't want to wait for postage. http://www.wnhs.health.wa.gov.au/services/breastfeeding/index.htm

Best way to store your breast milk in the freezer? Lay it flat then once frozen solid you can stack them, Use an old box or a plastic tub or even a zip lock bag to keep them all nice and neat in the freezer

Ashley Salazar | Parenting

A lot of people ask about how exactly these cookies work and Ashley Salazar from parenting.com has the following to say from her article on http://www.parenting.com/article/lactation-cookies-boost-nutrients-and-milk-supply Lactation cookies may be the best-kept secret among breastfeeding mothers. The ingredients in these yummy cookies work in a number of different ways to help moms boost and maintain their milk supply. What makes these cookies so special is that they contain galactagogues, which are substances that promote lactation in humans and animals. The brewer's yeast, flaxseed(Linseed) meal and oats in lactation cookies are what specifically help with a lactating mother's milk supply. * Brewer's yeast, most commonly known for its use in the production of beer, contains iron, protein, B vitamins, chromium, selenium and various other trace minerals. Not only does it promote milk supply, it is believed to help with fatigue and the "baby blues". * Oats are another must for breastfeeding mothers. They are high in fiber and full of iron, protein and complex carbohydrates. Low levels of iron in the body can actually reduce milk supply. * Flaxseed (linseed) has good fats and enzymes, which are important for increasing the content of breast milk. Anyone can eat lactation cookies, even dads, since they are high in nutrients that everybody needs, however they won't make you lactate unless you are alread breastfeeding.
