Here are some interesting facts about Indian food. Indian food is said to be based on six kinds of tastes (rasas)- Sweet(madhura), Salty (lavana), Sour(amala), Pungent(katu), Bitter (tikta) and Astringent (kasya). Chicken Masala & Butter Chicken are the dishes that made Indian food famous the world over. India is the largest producer of spices in the world. It is the land of rice that grows unbelievable variants like white, red, brown, sticky and even black! Black rice is found only in India and China and is also known as forbidden or magic rice. India is home to bhot jolokia, one of the hottest chillies in the world. Also called "ghost chilli", it is grown in North East states and is more than 400 times hotter than Tabasco sauce. Wikipedia lists nearly 200 types of Indian desserts! Indoor kitchen was an important structure in the house planning of Indus Valley people 4000 years ago. The kitchen opened in the courtyard, had a brick hearth and a sink linked to a brick drain- almost like we have now! Earliest evidence of what we may call as the outline of modern Indian food goes back to 3000 years ago, when we find evidences of charred gains and husk impressions in Lothal, Gujarat. Tomato, Potato, sugar and chilli were introduced in India around 16th and 17th century. Rajma originally belongs to Mexico and is a staple there. Naan is also said to have been brought to India by the Mughals and it has Persian roots. Bengal is the hub of Bandel cheese production. It is an Indian variety of cheese which is said to have been inspired by Portuguese. India has the lowest meat consumption in the world per person, which does not come as a shocker since 40% of the population is vegetarian. Chilli is the most widely used spice in India.
